Fujifilm Expands Professional Video Portfolio with P2 Format
Press release from NAB2008:
---------------------------

Popular flash-based video format a new addition at NAB 2008

VALHALLA, N.Y. --(Business Wire)-- Apr. 7, 2008
Fujifilm announced today that it will introduce P2 format memory
cards at the NAB 2008 Show taking place in Las Vegas, Nevada April
14-17. The addition of the P2 media compliments the full line of
Fujifilm tape and optical storage media products and reflects the
industry-wide acceptance of flash-based hardware as broadcasters
integrate new technologies with existing operations and tape media.

Fujifilm P2 cards will be available in 16 and 32 gigabyte (GB)
capacities at first, with a 64 GB version to follow later this year.

"Fujifilm offers the largest product line for the professional and
broadcast market, and the addition of P2 media represents another
unique option for our customers," said Tom Volpicella, Vice President,
Professional Market Sales, FUJIFILM Recording Media USA. "The size and
ruggedness of the cards require less maintenance and offer greater
productivity for camera crews in a variety of situations and
environments."

No pricing however.

I'd expect pricing to be identical. Pricing on SxS is identical whether it's Sony or SanDisk, I expect this will be the same.

But, this should mean the end of shortages!

FINALLY.

I was starting to think the whole "Capitalism fosters competition" thing didn't apply to P2 :)

Which is why prices could be lower. Otherwise everyone would just feel "safer" going with "official", "directly compatible" Panasonic cards.

Exactly. Supply could eventually bring Demand down which'll get us all better pricing.

I wouldn't mind adding three more 16 gigs to the P2 Line-up. Provided the next Pana P2 Prosumer Push Packs a Punch.

I hate speculating, but from past experience, the prices might start out the same, but this will eventually help bring pricing down.
The other upside that I see is this will help the P2's acceptance and longevity as new products try and merge in on the solid state market.
Long live the P2 cards! I gotta get a few more years out of my investment. :)

If Fuji licensed some technology from Panasonic, then there might be some pricing agreement as well.

I hope not, because the whole anti trust issues arises in any restraint of trade or competition.

If prices are the same then I can't see many people opting for the Fuji cards if the Panasonic cards are available. Simply because Panasonic has the history and reliability behind it. I know Fuji is no hoodman and is not a small player in the field of media but in video people will stick with what works. And right now Panasonic cards have been proven to work.

So unless Fuji has some competitive advantage over Panasonic, be it pricing, supply, or technology improvements, than I can't see many picking them as the first choice. At least not within the next year or so.

if Fuji has an easier website to navigate to get firmware upgrades and etc Ill go with them.

Pretty miffed that I need to use a PC to install new firmware on my p2 store as well.

Panasonic needs to try harder.

Maybe we can persuade Barry to do the durability test of the Fuji cards? You know, submerge them in water, drop them, etc. :)

I can't wait! Fuji keeps Kodak honest, now they can keep Panasonic in line, too.

Rob, I've got a P2 firmware and drivers website if you need it.

I've thought of doing a big preposterous test like that with SxS ('cause SxS feels like it's made out of plastic, vs. the solid iron of a P2 card). So maybe a three-way test of all the memory cards? I just need to get the manufacturers to donate one of each, 'cause even though these things are robust, I'm sure they do have their limits. (although I've repeatedly dunked a P2 card in water just to show that it can take it).

I tried to download the AVC Intra Mac software from your site, and it requested a password and user log in.

Why is that?

Thanks for letting me know. I'll provide the username and password on my page. I wish I could host the files directly so there was no need for a password, but that would put me in violation of the EULA.

I'm not sure that you can legally provide the username and password. I think the safest thing to do is to provide the link to the instructions that cause the information to be e-mailed to the requester.

This quote seems interesting.

I've had dreams of future P2 cards that fit in express card slots. You would just need to put a $50 adapter like this in all the slots on all the current P2 products, and the new P2 cards would be backwords compatible. Maybe thats what Fuji is going to do. It would be a dream come true. :D
