"HVX only records 1080i, no 24p, and it looks like horseshit" -Give me a 1080p file

So I have been on the set of a student film that has been shooting with an hvx200 - they plan on doing a film out so I was extremely surprised when I found out they were shooting 720p and I asked the DP why they weren't shooting 1080p (space issue maybe).

But he tells me that the HVX200 doesn't shot 1080 at 24p.

I told him that it did. He said that it doesn't natively, it shoots 1080i and it looks like horseshit. I told him that yes, it laid it into a 1080i stream with 2:3:3:2 cadence, but it was true progressive capture - just like the DVX100 did.

Long story short, everyone thinks I don't know what I am talking about now - I showed them panasonic's site where it lists the formats and that didn't even convince him, and they are saying that if it does 1080p is converts it from a 1080i signal making it look like horse-****.

So does anyone have a high quality 1080p footage I can show him? It's a small school and things get around, so I need to nip it in the bud that I don't know what I am talking about. Obviously I dropped it on set since I am not going to argue with the DP in front of the crew, but it really did make me look bad - I didn't mean to be difficult but misinformation bothers me.

Thanks,

-Josh

why do you need to prove anything to him? if he doesn't understand how 24p is embedded into a 60i video signal then he needs to get with the program. this is nothing new. the telecine process has been doing this for years and does not look like horse-sh*t or any other kind of sh*t.

The DP needs to go back to school -- get him to sign up for one of Barry's Bootcamps, or make it him buy the DVDs.

The HVX never ever does anything interlaced, even the interlaced output formats are derived from progressive images. If you shoot 60i, the camera scans 60 progressive frames and throws away half of each of those frames.

I feel my reputation has been tarnished in that everyone thinks that I'm wrong and he's right - I guess that I don't really have to, but nobody there seems to understand what I meant. Even the guy that owned the camera said that there was only a 1080i setting...

I was just sitting there smacking my head and I probably argued a bit too much on set ...

Everyone on a horror feature I worked on smacked themselves on the forehead when I told them that they could've shoot 1080i with an advanced pulldown and get 1080 24p. They were halfway through shooting. I had them shoot some VFX shots at 1080 to get cleaner plates to edit in with the 720 they were shooting. Everyone believed me because I'm 35 and work with Barry I guess.

But the DP on this shot some of the Hellraiser and Children of the Corn sequels so he new his stuff lighting and comp wise. I guess it's up to the first AC to read the manual? Anyway we shot it that way and it looked great and edited cleanly with the 720p.

They'll probably want full quality but here's some 1080 24p, it's compressed for the web let me know if they are going to make me upload something full res.

OR you could just direct them to this thread where the guy that wrote THE frickin' HVXbook says you are right and they are wrong.

If none of the above work PM me and I have one last card up my sleeve.

Have them do a camera test; 1080 and 720 of the same thing and compare them.... they easily see the difference. And see that 1080 doesn't look as bad as they're saying it does.

You'd be surprised how much of life is letting dumb people think they're right.

True.

In this case let it go.
Bring it back up with more 'evidence' and you'll come off as defensive and insecure.

Instead go on about your business.
With time it will become more than clear who knows their horsesh*t and who doesn't.

No way Luis ... let's storm the castle! :kali:
:cheesy:

I mean they're doing a disservice to their other students with bad info and projects that don't look as nifty as the could.

Let me at 'em. Let me at 'em :2vrolijk_08:

Well, now I'm unsure how to approach the DP. I don't want to be "I told you so," - I need to be respectful because this business is all about networking. I'm not sure if I should just let it go with him and just tell all the other people who were there that didn't know, or what.

I think it was a bit disrespectful of me to argue with him on set, student production or no, so I feel as if I have already been in the wrong even though I was right, and I am unsure if I should just leave it be or risk him getting offended.

I am so impressed with the HVX200 btw now that I've seen it up close - I almost wish I hadn't bought the andromeda mod.

Honestly I have a friend who's like this, where I 100% know that I am right (he made a VERY controversial statement that said people in europe don't like 35mm adapter...yeah he said it) in what I'm talking about and he has to argue about every little detail and has to have the last word on something. My advice is to shrug it off, don't play it like you're better than him, only that you know what the camera can do and that's FACT.

Who cares if the DP doesn't know the technical reasons why the HVX looks better at 1080 than 720, anyone can tell you that resolution alone is better because you get more detail in what you capture (look at the difference between a 3mega pixel camera and an 8, HUGE difference).

So just let it lie, don't worry about it and if word gets out that you apparantly don't "know what you're talking about" you have the very PROOF in the manual that says you're right, so when someone asks about it and you show them they'll realize the other guy was being a d*ck about it.

The DP probably did what I did - shot in 1080/24p (not 1080/24pA) and tried the wrong way to pull it into FCP. When you do that, it does look like crap, but that's not because of the footage. That's because of the way it's been processed.
