HVX200 & Varicam not allow in same timeline

Hello,
Any help with this would be appreciated. I just shot a low budget film using the varicam and the hvx200. I set both cameras in the 720/24p mode and went on about my way. I was just notified that the varicam footage is not allow in the same timeline with the hvx 200 footage. I pulled out the camera and read about the 24p normal and 24p advanced modes. Is it possible that the hvx200 needed to be in the advance mode for recording to match with the varicam. If so can I downconvert using a software program like DVfilmmaker? What else can I do to get these to play in Avid.
Thanks
Soup:)

There's no reason you couldn't use both in the same timeline. Give some more details about what you're using to edit, etc.

They are going to have different timbases wich is going to be the problem the Varicam footage will more than likely be 59.94 and the HVX footage ill be 29.97 in 24P mode unless the extra frames are stripped out. So you need them both to be at 23.98 if you want to put them in a true 24P timeline which will mean post processing both sets of the footage to remove the extra frames. Or the other option is to ingest the Varicam footage at 29.97 and then import the 24P footage from HVX unprocessed at the same timebase unless of course the HVX footage is 24PN. Other option is to match the HVX footage to 59.94.

So what should I have do to make this work properly and also if I ingest the varicam will I loose quality. How about going the other way from HVX to 59.94 is it the same.

they are working in Avid express pro hd, playback was done with the Panisonic 1200 deck.
I think they have come to a conclusion that a down convert of the varicam footage is the way to go I am just concerned that the degredation will be noticable.

Well depending on the codec they use it will be noticeable I would recommend something that maintains the HD frame size relatively uncompressed that maintains the 4:2:2 color space, and correct me if I'm wrong Barry but if they are ingested at the same timebase then there should be no reason they shouldn't both go in the same timeline. Unless you have conflicting codecs or something. You can import and play the DVPRO-HD from the HVX fine?

just so I know I have pulled out my p2 camera and what setting should it have been 720p/60p, 30p, obviously not 24p or should it be 24pn and what does that N stand for Normal? There is even a 30pn?

oh man.. Are you telling me that you did not read the manual? I think that is the first thing that needs to be done before touching the Camera. N=Native. Read the manual, so people dont have to typ it. As a matter of fact, The manual is posted in these forums, catn rememebr where. You can D-load and read. I read this 3 days before I turned on the camera, then I read again, THEN I BOUGHT BARRY's book.

Here is a link to the manual

But for serious, I would think you should shoot the same camera mode at the Vari.?

Not really possible as the Varicam shoots a 59.94.... wrapper over everything and then flags the extra frames. You going to have to post process one or the other to get the same timebase.
