Anyone Interested in a DV Rack like app for MAC?

Hey look I didn't mean to be rude, I just thought that 700$ was a bit steep.

I'm also glad there is competition, and as a mac user, I'm glad it's on our side.

I'm sure they're all good products, but honestly, who here would buy the same thing for a higher price, with no additional functionality?

What's wrong with attacking a price. People do it all the time! This is a message board. If anything it helps the developer because they can asses how much people are willing to pay. And since when does saying "feh," constitute an attack? C'mon isn't this gross oversnsitivty?

If veescope hand handle the HVX HD then that's a deal.

Exactly what is served by attacking a price?

Just don't buy it. And unless you are aware of development costs, and that aren't the same for every developer, it's a little hard to say something is too expensive.

At least that's my view.

Well, David, maybe you have really really deep pockets. I DON'T.

I hope someday, with hard work I don't have to think about the difference between 500 and 700$ but to most people that's a fair chunk of change.

Also, what is served by attacking a person who choses to point out that something is overpriced to them?

Yes, I wrote an application for the Mac that has direct to disk recording for the HVX200. Features, include a waveform monitor that overlays directly on top of the video and a vectorscope. In addition, it has high and low Zebra patterns, title safe, overscan overlays. Also, it's only $100.

I just ran across this app and it looks great, particularly for the price. The one missing feature that to my mind stops it from being a slam dunk is automatic stripping of redundant frames when recording 24p or 30p direct to disk. That feature doubles at the very least the amount of recording time available with a given amount of storage. I will likely give the demo a try anyway. The auto-chromakey feature looks very nice for setting up greenscreen shots.

You were "attacked?"

You have to be kidding.

All I asked is for people to be respectful of a company's efforts because competition, especially on the Mac platform, helps us out.

Let it go. Nobody was attacked

Oh, c'mon David, don't play the semantics game, you're above that.

I thought you were rude, I said so, done.

Let's get back on to the topic please? Is that okay with you?

Veescope seems to make sense for the least money. I don't plan on using the direct recording feature, so that doesn't bother me, but it will have to have 1:1 pixel display so I can get perfect focus. Brad will it do that for the HVX200?

To ALL the people out there programming these monitoring/recording/calibrating apps:
Please, don´t overlook the PAL users!
Since FCP still doesn´t let us stream 720p or 1080p from the HVX, this feature will interest a lot of PAL HVX users out there!
Keep up the good work!

My exact quote:

"I just don't like anybody attacking another's product or price." No mention of anyone there.

You may need glasses. :)

Anyway time to move on. NAB is upon us.

Bena - I tried the trial of HD Monitor and I must say I'm impressed. It made focussing a doddle. I was thinking of getting a little monitor, but why pay over a thousand dollars for something that's just a little better than what is in the camera?

One thing that seemed bizarre when I was testing HD monitor is that I had my HVX set to 720p, yet the signal appeared to be coming in interlace and I got strange field shifts if I moved things around in front of the camera... Am I doing something wrong?

I will be wanting the update that is capable of 720 and will be waiting for that. :D Any idea of the ETA for the 720?

Also - Will there be a monitoring only version, as with the SD version?

Also, also - I love the rule of thirds overlay! Great stuff - What about a Golden section version, too? ;)

Another general question - Does anybody know of a good way to mount a Mac Book pro to a tripod? Is there such a device out there?

got the same thing, checked a few settings then read the manual-- only to find on ALMOST THE LAST PAGE THAT 720 isnt supported (yet) :thumbdown

could have posted that a little clearer somewhere bena. (i mean what do you REALLY think most people demo-ing this are going to think)

when 720 IS supported, will this program automatically drop redundent frames?

Thanks for bringing something like this to market for mac users-

Whoops, I meant "Set to 1080p"... I set the camera to 1080p, but the display in HD monitor looked like it was interlace, not progressive...

Just wanted everyone to know that we just released an update that now supports 720 Mode.

Thanks
Ben

I will buy it, but not for $500, I prefer to invest $800 with premiere cs3 and having editing capabilities + Encore + onlocation than paying a stand alone app to do DVR + scopes, if are going to make a dvrack killer app with a lot more functions, maybe.

$350 sweet spot

In case anyone is interested, there is a software shoot out review in Event DV magazine sept 07.

HD Monitor was picked as the Best software of the 3 reviewed.

Some Qoutes:

"“If I have to choose only one, HD Monitor Pro is the best of the three apps, in my opinion, due to its clip manager and integration with FCP.”

“The clip manager by itself is so useful and valuable, I have to rate this app as my favorite. The clip manager is by far the best feature of all three apps. I do like the streamlined interface and keyboard shortcuts.”

“ I found HD Monitor Pro well worth the price and very useful for more sophisticated productions.”

Not to take anything away from HD Monitor, I noticed that Ben Balser did not mention the 24pNative equivalent capabilities of Scopebox.

Does HD Monitor also provide the functionality?

New Features in 1.5:

Real Time Markers
Add pre-named markers to your clip in real time using the number keys 1 through 0 for a total of ten pre-named Real Time Markers. This will save you a ton of time when you export to Final Cut Pro and all your pre-named markers are in each clip for fast and easy access. Each of these Real Time Markers can be edited in our clip manager at any point after the clip has finished recording. Easily add, delete, rename, move or set the duration of the Real Time Marker. Add Markers to your clips so that you can quickly find these important spots later when editing in Final Cut Pro. This is a great feature when there is little time to edit your footage and output. An amazing time saver for creating a Same Day Edit for a wedding or other time sensitive event.
Just imagine how useful it would be to not have to shuttle through your video clips in Final Cut Pro to find the important parts you are looking for. If you were shooting a wedding video and needed to deliver a Same Day Edit to show at the end of the wedding, our software products will save you the time of capturing your tapes and then finding the important parts in each of those clips, saving you hours of wasted capturing time because we record direct to disk and giving you more time to be more creative in your editing without worrying if you will finish on time.

The possible uses are only limited to your imagination. Are you shooting legal depositions? Now you can easily mark when a lawyer objects. Shooting a Hollywood style film you can mark the slate, where the action starts, actors out takes, getting room tone, etc.

Real Time Marker Sets
Create as many Marker Sets as you need to suite all the different types of shooting you do. Easily create and manage sets for:
Weddings, Legal Depositions, Commercials, Interviews, Short Films, etc.
Each Marker Set has 10 customizable names to give you the flexibility to quickly and easily find important points in your video.

Clip List Export to Text
Now you can save a ton of time by exporting your Clip List with all your named clips, ratings, comments, clip duration, and all your Real Time Markers with their own time code. If you shoot legal depositions you know that you need to keep a log book of lawyer objections. You can create a Real Time Marker with the name “Objection” and add this marker to your video clip every time a lawyer objects. Then simply use our Clip List Export to Text feature to create a text file with all the objections listed with the time they occurred in the video clip. Print this file and you no longer need to keep a log book when shooting depositions. There are many useful things one can do with this Clip List for other shooting situations.

Other Changes:
The Record button now flashes twice per second making it easier to recognize if you are actually recording.
Using Zebras in Mac OS 10.5 no longer causes a color shift to the Main Video window.
HD clips viewed in Quicktime Player now have the correct aspect ratio set.

Good stuff, Ben. Downloading now. I'll have a good chance to try things out tomorrow night.
