How to use footage from your HVX200 HD on a PC

Filming with your HVX200 HD onto P2 cards generates MXF files. In order to use the footage with Premiere or Vegas you need to convert these files to AVI or Quicktime.

I am posting this to share the hoops through which I had to jump in order to achieve my goal.

First, to get you computer to recognize the P2 cards:
  • In the camera menu, go to "OTHER FUNCTIONS" and under "PC MODE" choose "USB DEVICE"
  • At the back of the camera, press the mode button once to get in MCR/VCR mode then press it again and hold for 2 seconds to go to PC/DUB mode
A good version of Windows should recognize the P2 cards and show something like drive F:\ and drive G:\ (or whatever letter the cards got assigned). If it does not work, try installing the CDs that came with the camera or look for the latest driver on the internet ( http://panasonic.sixbullets.net has them ). You will then find your MXF video files in the folder F:\CONTENTS\VIDEO.

I tried these 2 softwares to convert the MXF files to AVI:

Raylight has a demo that puts a watermark in your footage but it works right away.

Aspect HD has a 15 days fully working demo. To use Aspect HD, you need to install Panasonic's P2 Viewer first (choose DVCPRO)

That's it, I hope it helps.

There is no version of Windows that will recognize the P2 cards in the camera or in a PCMCIA/PCCard slot without installing the drivers.

I would always get the drivers from the source, i.e. Panasonic's P2 Support Desk. It will always have the latest drivers, firmware and utilities.

Great People In This Forum, Thank U All For The Help. I Am Picking Up My Hvx200 2morrow. Hopefully Will Soon Post Some Footages I Get From It. By The Way, I Have Edius 4.0, And I Heard It Will Handle Mxf Files Without Any Third Party Decoder, Or It Won't ?
I Use Vegas For Almost 4 Yrs, I Love It, But Might Will Have To Leave It For A While After I Turn Hd, Or I Will Save For Raylight Maybe, But Somehow I Dont Want To Pay That Amount Money For It.

Edius Broadcast will -- make sure it's the Broadcast version.

If it is, it's the best-integrated NLE for the HVX/P2.

Thank You So Much David, I Think Wut I Got Is Broadcast Version,
I Wish I Was In The States, Then I Can Join The Hvx Bootcamp. Sigh.... Must Be A Fun And Educative Event.

Keep Up All The Good Works U All!
