Have I been wasting money on HDV tapes?

oh, you mean the box around the tape.

Yeah, it is bigger - but it can take more nocks & falls than the smaller DV tape boxes.

I use the more expensive Sony HDV tapes and pass the cost on to the client (well they are actually marked up). It's hard to not have something important or being paid for and cut corners. To each his own, but when you run into trouble it will get you at the wrong place and time.

I just got my A1 yesterday and stocked up on Panny AMQ tapes. I never had one problem with them in my DVX, so I'm hoping they'll be just as good in the A1. I'll report back if I have any problems.

I've been using Pana PQ tapes for several years in my Sony A1U for both HDV and DVCAM, haven't had a problem yet. Just got a Canon XH-A1 (W00T!) and see no real reason to switch. And they're only about $3.60 each in quantity, which means I am never tempted to cheap out and reuse them.

Is there any reason, why to go cheap on tape, after spending thousands of dollars on camera equipment?
Isn´t a project where a lot of people work hard on accomplishing it, worth the money for good tape?

Let the client pay for it, if there´s no client, stop smoking or drink less next weeend and you can afford the extra money...
