Importing DVCProHD with P2CMS to Final Cut Pro

Hi Everyone,

I have searched for the information on this site and cannot find a direct answer.

I have just shot a short at 720/25pN
I used P2CMS on OS X to offload 8 x 16GB cards
I exported 7 cards to the same directory
And 1 card to an external hard drive

I now have to import the footage into FCP 6 on a different computer.

Do I just copy the directorys to the different computer and then import to FCP?
Or do I need Raylight?
Or something else?

I would be grateful for any answers or suggestions.

Thank you

Raylight would eliminate the need to import anything; you could just edit the footage right off your external hard disk.

You won't need it though; you can import the footage from those drives using FCP6 and it'll copy the footage from MXF files on the external drive, to MOV files on your internal hard disk. Nothing else is needed.

Thanks for the reply Barry!

Also one last thing, would I loose any quality when it converts the files from .MXF to .MOV? Does it make any difference to the footage? Does it still use the DVCProHD codec?

How did you do it? I can't get the Log and Transfer from FCP to recognize the files. I can't them to show up in the window to select and add them to my queue. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

In your first post you said you "exported 7 cards to the same directory."

What does that mean exactly?

The reason I ask is because I thought that it was necessary to keep the file structure for each p2 volume intact and separate from each other one.

I really can't believe that there's no better option right now built into FCP to edit these files natively.

I wish there was a way in FCP to just access the MXP files after having imported them using P2CMS and then organize them in such a way that they aren't down three directories & named some random 6 letters & numbers.

I'm going to be shooting lots of stuff over the next 4 months or so for a documentary, so having something that will keep these all together in one place, named correctly, and natively editable (without having to copy them over and put on a MOV wrapper) built in to FCP would be incredible.

I guess I'll look into some of these applications... It's hard to do this and be a student with a super low budget.
