selling my a1 for cheap

what your getting is a stock camera. my camera was new not used or passed of as new. fotoconnection gave me an higher value battery for half price. so yes, they do up sale as does a car dealer, its their job. they are giving a 10 test run if you dont like it send it back. CC it, if its all bad, you have 30 days with a CC to dispute or return. my camera has NEVER given me a problem.

when i comes to the warranty, you have europe or usa. Europe, if anything goes bad and you send it to Europe and its six months turn around. that is the cheaper price, or you pay someting like 250 and get it thru canon usa. i phoned my stuff in. i would order from them again..like i said before, they are rude, but once you say your ready to order.....attitude changes real fast.

I'd be interested in the camera as well. Just shocked at the price is all. If you've never had a problem with the camera, well that's great! All the power to you.

If you decide to sell it, PM me and if I haven't already purchased one I'll gladly be interested in yours.

I would highly suggest calling Panasonic or Canon to confirm these claims because as far as I know, this is not the way warranty works. The store will tell you anything to get you to make a purchase, but once anything happens, it's you who are left holding the bag. Every camera bought in the US comes included with a US warranty from the manufacturer, as well as a warranty card that allows you to register the camera in the correct territory. There is no way they can sell you a European warranty if they are authorized dealers in the US. That's because Panasonic, Canon and Sony all have regional headquarters that aren't related to each other and in fact sometimes compete. So no way is a camera purchased in the US eligible for a European warranty.

Based on the info you've provided so far, fotoconnection sounds more and more like a gray market dealer. I went through pretty much the exact same thing when I purchased my FX1 from a similar place. Over half an hour of trying to sell me more things, the offer of a "high capacity battery" for half price, which cracked and broke about three months later. There was also the $200 "upgrade" to a camera that's "made in Japan" and not "made in Malaysia." Like you, I got the camera brand new in the box, and it works but if something had been wrong with it I doubt the store would be very accommodating.

In the end though, you're the buyer and it's up to you to decide whether you're still getting a good deal or not. But it doesn't hurt at all to do a few facts check. If you're getting the HVX then a simple PM or email to the Pana rep on this board would do.

Bull Sh*t!

It's called upselling or suggestive sales and it most certainly is part of professional sales practice at all establishments.

Denying him the sale at the advertised price is deceptive and illegal as all hell, but that's a different story than merely selling and making suggestive sales.

Is each store allow to steer the customer toward a more expensive items? Sure. Is it "professional" to badger the customer for nearly half an hour by offering them bogus upgrades and marked up items? Absolutely not. I've never seen any authorized dealers do that.

What I'm talking about isn't salesmanship, it's a bait and switch tactic. These guys aren't quite as bad as the Crooklyn stores that will charge you thousands, but they are unnecessary unpleasant to deal with. I'll just post my FX1 buying experience as an example, and hopefully other people who have bought from dealers like these can find a similar tone:

Me: "So how much is shipping?"
Store: "Well, shippping will be $35 for the camera, but insurance costs will bring the total up to $200."
Me: "What!? $200 for shipping is absolutely ridiculous."
Store: "Sir, if you do not use this insurance service and anything happens, the "cheap" insurance service will actually refused to pay you, do you understand?" (of course this is a ball faced lie, combined with a little bit of threat)
Me: "Doesn't matter, I refused to pay $200 for shipping, give me the standard rate."
Store: "Alright, if that's what you want. And sir, and you sure you want to buy this model, for just a little more I can get you the "Made in Japan" model versus the "Made in Malaysia" model. It's just so much better." (Another lie, because all of these camera should carry the "Made in Japan" label)

--Another 10 minutes of back and forth until I finally gave in.
Store: "And as a compliment, we'll also through in a high capacity battery for the camera."
Me: "Cool! That sounds like a good deal."

It's enough to say that all the "extras" stuff that came with the camera broke after a few months of use. The included wide and telephoto lense were of so poor quality I couldn't use it at all. When all is said and done I think I save like $100 over the going price, but it's just isn't worth the hassel. It's not until much later that I realized that these guys will say anything to get you to make a purchase, and that I'm better off just buying from somewhere else.

Jade, I went thru the same type of thing two years ago with my DVX100b, telling me oh the one advertized is the Japanese model, is on backorder forever, and is not a DVX100b. But we can offer the real deal for this amount (going rate) and throw in 3 filters for 100 bucks.

Then again with my Canon A1... umm yes its 500 bucks cheaper, but thats about what it costs to ship it. You know the old saying... If it sounds too good to be true, its grey market.

i have a warranty..i know trust me i know. go looking out for all the heads up. maybe i got lucky? my a1 works just fine. the wiz store that i read, i think they were the WIZ before. they were a shady business back in NY in the 80-90's. dude scammed people bad. when i call canon for support, they give it to me based on my Serial Number.

There's no doubt it's a gray market dealer. I've heard of some people getting great deals though which seems to be the case with Travis. I guess you can get lucky sometimes.

the ONLY reason i went with foto was they gave me a 10 day test run. if i was not happy, i paid for the return and my CC was refunded. with a deal like that, you cant really go wrong. dont get me wrong....i was nervous about really getting a brick in the box.

I don't understand why everyone keeps heckling him - everyone wants to prevent people from getting a bad deal, but he's already purchased from the place and acknowledges the risks. Shouldn't we just leave it at that?

Why do places like Broadway Video even exist?
I mean these magazines should not let them advertise.
And companys such as Canon should sue them.

Greed. Dishonesty. Broke naive filmmakers to prey upon. Overworked, hands tied with red tape, and / or apathetic bureaucracy.

This isn't the place for lengthy discussions.
And yet the next post is a completely open discussion starting question, D'oh!
All discussion here should be about this cam, the price, the features, the assurance of warranty, etc. Not general comments about gray market stuff (some was pertinent but too much).

If you want more about Brooklyn camera shops or scams read and discuss here:
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=12269
It's an important issue and we should do all we can to help people from getting screwed and it warrants discussion just not here.

travisl has given the history of the camera.

yes, some of these post went to far. the fact is you gotta do your homework. guys, the company gives you a 10return policy. within that ten days, YOU call call and reg your product with the manufacture.ThEN, run the camera thru all the test you like. IF THEN it works for you and its the 9th day, then keep it.

Now, having said that, IF fotoconection gave me NO 10 day grace period, HELL NO, it would not have went there....PERIOD

I think the problem is that you can't rely on their 10 day return policy. What would likely happen is when you try to return it after finding out that the warranty isn't valid they would refuse the return and you'd be stuck with a grey market camera that might work.

Yea I would like to know this place too..Don't know why he didn't mention the name of the place when he posted the price he was getting it for...
