Life on Wheels and Boards Episode 1

Ok, I promised some bikey footage, but heres something better!

My friends and I have decided that we wanted to make our own extreme sports webshow, sort of like the show Drop In or Stund Visions (one of the members here shot that), but with riders who nobody ever hears about, so in a way it will be showing normal, everyday riders who are on a tad bit higher level then others, yet still aren't in the big budget movies. We'll be shooting most of our stuff on the Mendocino Coast and surrounding areas, but we'll also venture to Oregon, Tahoe and next season hopefully to Utah, as well as New Mexico and the rest of the South West. We will be putting out episodes as we shoot them, but not on a regular basis. They will only be on the interweb, and will be free to watch, download for your iPod, or burn to DVD for almost-ever. Eventually we will move up to HD from the DVX, but for now, we will be showing them in good old SD DV. This season will be shot in squeeze mode, but the next one will probobly go back to 4:3 just for the resolution.

Ok, enough of that, on to the goods!

Note: iPod version has slight time glitches, and it is stretched to 4:3 instead of letterboxed 16:9 as I didnt use the correct export settings.

Enjoy and keep an eye out for the next episode from Mt Bachelor Oregon!

Thanks,

Pretty cool man! I have always been a fan of DropIn, have all of the seasons on dvd :)
You got a lot of cool shots in your piece and I really like the warm colors.
The only thing I would like to comment on is that I was kinda hoping for a little more jumping and airtime, though that demands more guts and pain from the riders of course :)

Keep it up, looking forward to the next piece!

Thanks Smettli! I wish there were more hits/jumps too, but the two good drops were too wet and slippery, and he hasnt built up any more jumps yet :(. Next bike episode should have more jumps and whatnot, I might even ride in it a little.

Thanks,
Dory

The colors looked really good in that. The location was killer too; especially at the time of day you guys were there, with the misty/rainy look. Nice work!

that was dialed...

would you mind sharing your scene file and export settings for the full quality 720x480

looked so good

Aye, I'll go get them from my camera and post em in a second.

Export (as I remember)

h.264 with Adobe Media Compresser
VBR2pass with bit rate around 1.4mbps
turn off everything you dont absolutly need. And drop the audio down to 128Kbps.

Hell yeah man!

That looks awesome. Tell your stunt dummy, good move on the blue undershirt:D

Might want to be careful about how much you reveal about him. Jugs is highly illegally built from what I've heard.

I started out using a 1/48th shutter then switched to a 1/60th, but I think next time i may go as high as 120 for slow motion shots, since Pixlemotion got thrown off by the motion blurr.

Good stuff dude...I have a buddy that's way into this style of biking...I was planning on gettin out to film him sometime but the timing and weather never seem to be on our side....

Anyway, was this a lot of tripod work? That may be obvious...Any other stabilizing goodies?

How hard is it to film in the woods? Especially since you lose a lot of light in the woods....Iris wide open? Your shots look really well lit though...

Your video kind of reminds me of a bike video my buddy showed me last year....I can't remember what it was called but it was simply amazing....All done in film with all sorts of rigs to follow the guys through the forest...You've probably seen it....The video title is a single word....I think...haha...Good stuff though dude....Bet it feels good to go out and film...Keep it up!

I am pretty sure your talking about Roam from the boyz over at The Collective. Yes, that is simply the the best bike film ever made.

As for mine, yes, it was actually almost all shot from a tripod. I cant think of any shots that wernt a tripod actually. No, no other stablization devices, yet. I got a little surprise comming in the third episode, just cause i forgot to pack it when we went out and did this one.

As for shooting in the woods/forrest, nah, its not that hard. I actually usually had an iris of f3 or so, and thats with a polarizer. I usually had a shutter of 1/48 or 1/60. The biggest problem for me on that day was water. There was a shitload of dew on the leaves and branches, and my DVX took a few hits, but it was a champ and didnt fail me once.

that was pretty sweet. can you guys do any bmx tricks on those bikes? i know there are a lot of different types of mountain bikes but i think ive seen guys doin tailwhips and backflips at the skatepark

Yep, we (not we as in us around here but he ballsyer riders) do them all the time. if you look for New World Disorder 8 on youtbe you can see some INSANE tricks.

Nice Dory, real sweet. Loved the rack @ around 3.35 thru 3 different subjects, the slight stall on the barb wire was the crux of the whole shot. Overall it kept me real glued, the comps and use of the cam with your movements were real pro like. Great scene file settings mate, lovely colors suited the whole feel of the shoot. I've seen a few different mountain bike vids but this is one of my fav's.

Thanks shaun!

A litle update: the weather hasnt been cooperating (its been snowing and the light is just too flat) here at Mt Bachelor, so there wont be an episode this week. Next weekend we're supposed to be shooting another mendo trail, this one should have some more jumps on it though, and I got some new shiat i wanna try out.
