Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles

The girl got shot and she laid down on the ground without getting up. The intention of the writer was for the viewer to assume that a nice girl had just been killed. However, the effects wasn't quite what the writer was going for. It seemed to strange that a nice girl would be killed in a crossfire between the "substitute teacher" terminator and John Connor. My reaction to the girl getting shot was that there was no way they would shoot an innocent girl like that. She must be a Terminator as well.

Twist. You keep using that word. I do not think it means, what you think it means.

It was as much a "twist" as John jumping through the class window.

Inigo Montaya, I can't discuss it without getting into major spoilers. SO YOU ARE WARNED

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!

While it's not a twist on the order of "he was a ghost all this time", having the bank vault turn out to be a time machine, and that someone had travelled to 1966 to build it for the future, and then John, Sarah, and Hot Robot Chick travel forward from 1999 to 2007, past the chronolgy of T3, which took place in 2004, subsequently creating a new timeline that diverges from all the films...I'd call that a twist. It requires detailed knowledge of the previous Terminator films to really get it, so I can see how the casual viewer might not get it.

Technically it may not create a new time line, it really depends what theory or idea Friedman decides to use in the series. One thing I did like about T3, was that the future was inevitable. I wonder what the T4 movie starring Christian Bale is going to do about the storyline?

Also, a small correction, the guy sent back to the bank was sent back in 1963, if I remember correctly. (not that it matters)

Okay.... makes sense then. I had heard that the TV show will take place entirely between T2 and T3 (which I happened to watch just a few days ago). I guess I didnt pay too much attention to the events of 2004. oops.

I just read about the "alternate timeline" on Wiki. Do you think this will be good or bad for the story? I liked the idea of it filling holes as opposed to going all katterwonky.

Apparently the "twist" was that I have no idea what's going on. Wait. That's no twist.

How is it that 7 years later they've built a 4 lane freeway where a bank used to be? That's a bit excessive.

(Robots, time travel, world destruction, and hot hootered toasters are okay. I have a problem with the location of a freeway.)

That's assuming people travel to the same exact spot, which is something I always had a problem with in time travel movies anyway. The earth rotates and travels around the sun, so the same exact spot in 7 years would most likely be in the vacuum of space.

She said "Same place, different time."

("place" can be substituted for "spot" or "location". I dont remember the exact word. I would watch the TiVo again, but I have T2 on. See what you're done?)

Did anyone else have a problem with Sarah Connor's hair color in the first episode? Not the fact that she has black hair now -- that could be explained away by the fact that she's trying to change her appearance to avoid detection. But the photo the FBI guy shows of her in the mental hospital shows her with black hair, not the blonde/brown hair she had in the first two films... Hmmm...

Anyway, I just watched tonight's episode. Very nice.

The main thing I liked:

When is this forum going to have spoiler tags anyway? My forum has them... :D

They actually addressed Sarah Connor being dead in T3. While the exact dates don't match (which one would expect if the timeline is different), they do actually address the cancer issue. Which is much better than I expected. I can suspend disbelief about minor details, dates, etc, but no amount of time travel is gonna explain away cancer. Good job here.

Bringing back Enrique, a generally irrelevant character from T2 was also a very nice touch, and helps bring the series into the realm of the franchise.

I really hope the show keeps making an effort to maintain continuity with the existing lore. We shall see...

I liked it, but . . .

Only in the way that I liked the Highlander series in relation to the movie. It's a series set with the same premise, but it's not really part of the story.

It's seriously straining credibility that Judgment Day keeps getting pushed back further and further, yet John still ends up being the Great Leader of the Resistance every time it does. By the time the war/resistance gets around to happening, Reese is going to be an old geezer. And he should definitely be alive, and probably close a teenager, in this series's present day.

And one of the show's biggest assets actually works against it -- this Sarah Connor is pretty true to the Linda Hamilton T2 version. As such, there's no way she would have accepted Cameron as an ally in a split second.

But I'm glad they're erasing the third movie, at least.

I thought about this too -- I figured they'd have Reese end up as a kid in John's class or something. But then I did the math.

The first Terminator established that Reese wasn't born until after Judgement Day (originally August 29th, 1997). So even if he was born ten minutes later, he would only be 10 years old by 2007, when this show takes place.

So the real question is: was Reese born as a result of something related to Judgement Day happening (if so, then each time Judgement Day is pushed forward, so would his birth)? Or is he born at roughly the same time either way?

Really, it doesn't matter too much, as the future leader John Conner is depicted as at least ten years older than Reese when he gets sent back. So it will probably work either way.

(An interesting aside -- Wikipedia lists Reese's birthday as between 2007 and 2008. Maybe we see him born in the next episode when Sarah is in the hospital getting the results of her cancer test?)

Batutta's scorning of me urged me to do a little research of the first three movies. (I just watched them, I never studied them.) And I watched T2 again today....

John was supposed to be TEN in T2???

er???

All I have to say is...... "ahhhh... Summer."

Hmm. Another thing I thought about later -- the skinless Terminator should not have been able to make the time jump.

Technically, it might not have--if the freeway was being built over the old bank location, both the head and body might have been (separately) buried in rubble for eight years. (OK, not the most likely of scenarios, I'll grant, but it could work that way. :) )

I didn't the second episode as much as the first, but it's still not too bad. The most interesting thing last night was that Cameron registered to the Terminator as "UNKNOWN CYBORG." Can't help but wonder if she might not be Skynet-brand... ;)
