The New HV30 is here

WOW. less than two weeks after my H20 purchase.

oh well, I didn't want to spend the extra money on a black
case and 30p....

But we saw it coming with the ongoing discounting of the HV20. That's what usually happens. But maybe now you have a sought-after cult camera, an original pre-Vixia Canon!

The 30p is there for web video people, otherwise no big deal (it's just easier to half it to 15fps) Otherwise, it's still a cheap plastic camcorder. Feel good that you won't have to pay $350 more for the same thing once the HV20s are off the shelf...

30p means 25 percent more resolution than 24p which is good unless you are going film out.

I'm curious, how do you get this figure?

If you mean it's 25 percent more resolution because there's 25% more frames then the statement is incorrect. Resolution refers to picture sharpness and 30p isn't going to make it any sharper than 24p.

The resolution is the same but there will be more information than 24p. But the thing is as long as you don't record fast moving objects you can still get a very good 30p picture out of 60i just by blending the odd and even fields. As for fast moving objects, recording them as progressive in the first place will be better.

Maybe they'll fix the pulldown flag issue. That would certainly make the HV30 very attractive. Of course Canon will never admit their mistake and advertise this as one of the features so we won't know until the camera is out.

Craptastic.

The HV20 is still a much much better buy.

Hopefully we will have a firmware upgrade for the HV20 that gives us an easy fix for the flag issue.

Who knows.. maybe we can port the firmware of the HV30 to the HV20?

Time will tell.

I don't think there will be any flags with HV30. Flags means extra data. It is not an easy transition. Where will they fit those flags. As long as the pulldown is removable, they won't bother changing anything.

what is the Hv20's flag mistake, and is it only to do with 24p? i know it is OT but anyway, no asky no getty, heh. :)

It doesn't add flags to its pulldown so most of the NLEs cannot detect the cadence and remove it. It looks like a regular 60i signal instead of a 60i signal with pulldown. So you need software like Cineform or TMPGenc to detect and remove the pulldown.

Hello All!
I am on the verge of purchasing a Canon HVx0. I am not considering the 10, but it is between 20 and 30. From what I have read here as well as other places, I am inclined to get the hv20. I could wait until the 30 hits the reviewers hands to get the full scoop, but I also do not want to wait too long and find the shelves empty of the 20. I also imagine the price of the 20 going back up as the supply dwindles.
Any suggestions as to what ya'll might do in my shoes?
Thanks!

Price isn't going to go up, as it's an older model and they're trying to get rid of them. The HV30 is the logical next step in a camera, but at the HV20's current price it's a much better deal. That's what I'd get.

Price has already went up since the holidays and the new announcement.

I still like the HV20.

You can get one for around $700.00
