Hello I have a 16g card for my new hvx. I will be getting about 17min of footage on it. when I am out of time what would be the best way for me to refresh my card and dump the footage. Bringing my laptop isn't realistic at this point. I looked into lacie rugged hdd but do they need to be powered? It seems that I need to be using firewire according to the instructions.

Any advice is greatly appreciated...

Thanks

A self / externally powered Firewire hard drive is the most compact form of offloading.

Though in this case I'd almost recomend looking in to renting/buying more P2 cards if possible.

That or a USB OTG drive. No need for a power supply there. Though the trade off is slower transfer speed.

Can you shoot 720/24pN? You'll get about 42 minutes per 16GB card. Rent a 32GB card and you'd have over two hours of footage possible without offloading anything.

I am instructed to shoot 60fps mostly... So can I use a usb to transfer the footage?? then a laCie Rugged HDD would/should work..in theory. Does the camera would supply power through USB?

The camera will not power any external hard drive. Whatever the drive system, it needs to be self-powered.

You can dump to any firewire drive - however the camera will format the drive before it uses it, so you'll need a dedicated drive.

You can't "dump to" a dumb USB drive directly, but rather you can use a 'smart' "On The Go" (OTG) USB drive in Host-mode to "pull" the files off the cards through the camera to 'dump' them.
