Hi guys,

I need a help here. I want to shoot a documentary in indonesia.
I wanted to have your opinions.
Should I buy a new DVX100B or a JVC GY-DV5100 second hand same price?

Thanks in advance for helping me out.

Hey guys I need a car.
I'm going for a drive.
Should I buy a new Subaru, or a used Honda?

... I think we are going to need a little more information about your application & needs before we can make any recomendations.

man that JVC has a monstrous profile compared to the dvx100b. i would consider if you plan to lug that thing everywhere or studio work. either way it's a whole different animal, go with the dvx100b.

Yeah, the DVX100 is a clear winner, unless they need interchangeable fully manual lenses. Or larger chips (better low light perhaps? maybe [I don't know]. Or 4-hour tape loads for long spans of continuous recording. Or the ability to have a built in FireStore without any external units/cables/batteries. Or professional battery compatibility. Or they will be shooting a lot without a tripod and would benefit greatly from a shoulder mounted design...

You get the idea .. the cameras are very very different - and both have their definite strengths.

We can't make educated suggestions and recommendations until we are properly educated to the need.
"A documentary" is hardly specifications, and a "monstrous profile" is hardly a reason to rule out a camera (unless it's been specifically said that it must be a compact/light/small camera .. but we don't know that.)

Can't say anything about the dv5001, but I had a DV500 and u simply can't compare those 2 cams... first of all the 1/2" ccd's are much more light sensitive the the panas 1/3" and this is just one out of many pro's. In my opinion these two cams are not compareable...the JVC is by far better than the DVX if you want to shoot ENG or a certain style of documentary. And the DVX is superior if you want to shoot short movies or movie-like documentaries.
If you are going to shoot 60i (or 50i as I do in PAL-land) then the JVC will give u the better pictures...but the 24p (25p) mode of the DVX is a feature I don't want to miss anymore...

Thanks for all the answers guys. If I understand the only pro of the DVX100 would be the 24p (25p). I've got a good friend who shot a documentary with the DVX100 in China recently. He said that 25p gives you a very good picture but with certain loss of light. In a documentary in a foreign asian country, you must be very quick to get your shot. People are a little scared in front of the cam. I really liked the colors of the Pana and I wonder If I could get these with the JVC. I had a Sony FX1 and I sold it lately because I could get the right colors and it was terrible in low light. Also the focus is only good when you use a little zoom. when you zoomed fully out I couldn't get a very sharp picture. So for me It's important to have a good dynamic range, lowlight preformance, A sharp picture in wide angle + good colors.

Same question here

Same question here

Magic Bullet 2007 does a VERY good job of deinterlacing footage. I'm undecided too - between the DVX and the JVC. Any idea where you can get it second hand for 2K...
I'd buy it for that price..
