What is the best tape to use? I tried playing a Sony tape i shot with my old Sony vx1000 after 9 minutes i got horizontal lines and had to get a tape head cleaner so i guess i wont be playing any of my old Sony tapes..... i wonder why that happened any thoughts ....

Dunno, but it had been so long since I purchaced a sony tape. But I needed tapes in an emergency so had to get sony. Popped one in the vx2100, not my A1, and ended up losing all the footage from the football game that night. The tape was glitchy and pixelated thru any camera I played it back in. Unwatchable, and unusable. I believe that will be my last purchase of sony tapes period!

For your situation, I heard old tapes tend to lose information, and can flake a bit. I need to go thru as many old ones I can with my little deck cam so I don't end up with the same problem.

Actually, it doesn't really matter what brand you used. Statistically speaking you're going to hit a bad tape sooner or later. There's really no "best" brand that's completely free of defect, and it's just a matter of how lucky you are. Pick one and stick with it.

I was told no sony tape in a canon that they make them with to much lubricant and they can gum up the camera

I've been using Sony tapes in the Canon A1 for the past year. Had one instance of dropout because of a bad tape but otherwise no problem. Using different brands of tape consistently can screw up your camera head because the type of lubricant used are different. Then they gum up the head. Picking one brand of tape (Pana, sony, maxell whatever) and sticking to it should result in no problem unless the tape itself is bad.

I use the panasonic AY-DVM63AMQ tapes. I hear they are very good with the A1 (lubricant-wise) and don't use the hard plastic cases that always crack like others. Personally, I don't know how much better they are for the camera than others, but I haven't had any problems yet so I think I'll stick with them.

www.zotzdigital.com seems to have the best deal for them. Very good site for anything.

Just so the few that answered know it wasn't drop out there were thick lines in the video of the sony tape then i took it out and all my tapes had the same thing til i got a head cleaning tape and ran it for 2 minutes.. The sony tape isnt that old either. canon wants alot for there tapes 15 $ each ... Thank you for all your input BTW think i will be using jvc or panasonic

it got dirty after i put a Sony tape in cause it was fine before that ok with that said . Well I talked with Canon yesterday afternoon they said Sony tape have a lube that isn't good for the xha1 now here is something I didn't know til I talked with Canon panasonic makes the Canon tapes Canon just puts there name on them. So I will be using panasonic or JVC . Now the canon guy said he thought Sony might have changed how they make theres , the tape in question I have had for a while. Ok good night all...
