P2 card to G5 Tower?

I'm pretty sure the answer is no, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

Is there any sort of adapter that will allow a G5 tower to accept P2 (cardbus) directly? I have a Powerbook and it works just fine, but it would be nice to be able to skip that step entirely when the camera's here in my studio, and have the convenience (and speed) of direct importing of P2 directly to my G5 Dual 2.7 for editing.

A yes, unlikely as it seems, would make my day.

Thanks

You can always buy a P2 Drive- but they're not cheap. Or try a PCMCIA drive bay, though I suspect these don't work.

The Powerbook itself will function like a P2 Store - it will mount to the G5's desktop in Firewire mode (connect the PB to the G5 via FW and boot the PB while holding its T key). More often, when I'm storing to an external FW drive on the PB, I'd just unmount it and attach that drive to the G5.

But I'm looking for instant gratification - plug the P2 card into the G5 and transfer the files - just like the PB itself.

Hence my recommendations...

Sorry...by P2 Drive I thought you meant P2 Store. I see now that it's a separate P2 product with 5 slots, etc. that costs about $2500. Right product, but at a pretty high price as you indicated.

It'd sure be nice if they made a much more affordable single slot version. Maybe some day...

I was unable to find ant Mac/P2 compatible PCMCIA PCI card adapters. Anyone know if such a thing exists?

As Noah said, there's the 5-slot PCD20 "P2 Drive", or you can also use a P2 Store as a direct slot reader, or a P2 Gear.

No inexpensive PCMCIA slot adapter for macs that I can think of. Such things do exist for Windows (PCI->PCMCIA adapters) but for some reason there's not one for Macs yet.

I suspect any ATA compatible PCMCIA reader that fits in your tower would do the trick.

I believe there is a thread that indicates that a PCI Cardbus reader is available for G5s, but not Intel MacPros.

Might want to search

This adapter is said to work on Macs.

Thanks so much for the info, all. I'm going to look into Jennyparis's suggestion.

Never ceases to amaze me what a great resource this board is... : )

now the trick would be - putting this in an external firewire or usb case with the proper bridge and have yourself a p2 solution for the mac for $150 ----

then again - if it were that easy - there would be one!

You can't do this. It would be a bottleneck, unefficient. PCI is //

1) PCMCIA (type I) or PC Card (Type II & III) is the interface equivalent to PCI bus.
This product act as a transparent bridge, motherboard sees a PCI bus device.

2) ExpressCard is the interface equivalent to the PCI Express bus.

PCI has parallel data bus, PCI Express has a serial data bus (smaller connector).

For HDD, the same migration happens, we had Parallel-ATA, now Serial-ATA.
