Two of my Newest Videos

that Santa film was funny man, good job, u made me smile and laugh! loved the whole fast paced flow, sound effects, music (funk oh yeah), the idea of Santa getting a new job.... I just wish at the end the punch would have been a bit better ( more realistic )

good stuff man, nice camera work, good transitions.... I really enjoyed it!

couple questions:

are the snow flakes digital?
how did u do the bubbles? with after effects?

Good ones.

I still a bit new to all this. How do you do that effect where the world kinda stretches (I think you did it when the guy shook his head in the music video). I see that alot and assume it's some kinda lens?

What camera you use and the adapter if any? I like the santa video, the music video, not so much, but the images were pretty.

looks like an accidental trombone shot.. Basically moving forwards while zooming out or moving backwards while zooming in.

eatsnax: Looking good, although focus and apature seem to be off on the music vid. What lenses did you use? the apature looks a little off on the beach.. maybe because of the sun and that you probably had to stop down. did you use reflectors to highlight the subjects? what camera did you use?

Absolutely loved the santa one! The snowflakes looked so good! The music video was cool, but could of used some CC.

The Music Vid is my first attempt at all with the Brevis and using 35mm lenses on my DVX-100a. I used a 50mm, a 20mm that I think IMHO is way too wide for the Brevis, because it causes vignetting and seems harder to control the apature. I also used a telephoto zoom lens that I'm not sure of the size of it cause I borrowed from a friend.

The focus issue is because the shoot was soooooooooooo rushed. Im mean sooooooooo rushed, that I'm surprised that it turned out half good! I did not use refletors or screens since I'm still working on getting some.

What I did though was start shooting as early as possible to have a smooth light but realized that its better to do it late afternoon since that smooth light lasts much longer. In the early morning you have but 2 or three hours and that is not enough. In the case of the music video shoot, we ran into problems, which always happen, and we lost an hour an that dragged the shot past noon where the light just blows!! Especially without screens and reflectors. But I was lucky to catch a moment with some cloud cover.

Yes your right about the Music Video needing CC. I wasent paid much and I had so many projects going also and the client was way too excited for me to finish that I just rushed it out to him. If it was up to me I'd take my time. But he just couldn't wait.

I used the DVX-100a and the Brevis. I love the Brevis. Only with the Music Vid. The Santa one is staright up DVX-100A with anamorphic lens and the letterbox option turned on in the DVX.

I appreciate your honesty about my videos, and I agree, the music vid could have been tighter.

did I mention I love the Brevis?

Craaig, who responded with the trombone effect is half right. Hes right that, that is a technique to make that happen.

Hes wrong in thinking thats what I did. I had a 35mm telephoto zoom lens on a DVX-100a using the Brevis on a tripod. And honestly all I did was zoom in and out. I was surprised that it turned out that way.

Thanks Im glad you like it!

That part of the shoot, the punch, was rushed. I hate rushing stuff. But with no budget...well ya know. The guy getting punched is myself, so I couldnt direct that part. My partner, Mike McGettigan is who directed it with me. He was in control of the shoot at that moment. Then again I think I could tweak it in editing. Cause I think I mighta transitioned into credits too early. Wadda ya think? Maybe I should leave it up a second longer on the punch to see the entire follow through? I think Ima try that.

Yes the snow flakes are digital. I used AF 7 with a plug-in called Trapcode Particle Generator. It gives you soooooo much control, its awsome. We shot 2 days before X-mas and in Michigan and had no snow!?! So I had to do something. And now Im glad it didnt snow. Well somewhat. LOL.

The bubbles were created by my partner and I animated them and composited them to the scene. And yes that too was AF.

Hey really good stuff! One question though! How did you get the videos to look so clear when uploading to myspace. My stuff always looks like crap after they compress.

I get asked that a lot. Well I use Sony Vegas but I'm sure the others have this function. I increase the "Bit Rate". First of all I render it to a MP4 and set dimensions at 320x240. Thats what it says to do on youtube to do. Also MySpace.

But then I increase the bit rate. But be careful not to increase it too much though because you may make the file larger than the 100MB limit.

The Santa one I used a bit rate of 20 million. and it came out to be 55MB but then it no prob cause the film is only 2 mins long.

My suggestion is do what I do. Trial and error.

Hope this helps and let me know how it turned out.

Yeah, the Santa one was hilarious! And that punch at the end was really good. The music video had a good idea, but I think there was way too much of the guy doing the same thing, like wearing the glasses and playing the guitar in almost every shot. It may just be me, but I couldn't even hear the guitar in the song. And the whole thing looked a bit out of focus. Other than that, the lighting was good, girls hot and not a bad song.
