anyone else have diabetes?

Looking for a woman
just found out this week that my blood sugar levels are extremely high. apparently my regular diet of pizza, coke, and pixie sticks hasn't been that good for my system. the doctor put me on glucophage, but it's upsetting my stomach. does anyone here deal with this?

I'm almost afraid to get tested due to my excessive alcohol consumption. (roughly five nights a week of 8-12 vodka tonics, and at least a couple shots of Jegger or Tequilla)

I do know that I have to eat something, even if it's just a coulple bites, ever FOUR hours on the dot. 20 minutes after my four hour mark and I get so light headed I almost passs out. Been that way for about 4 years now. Strange thing is, on the outside I look like I'm in very good shape ;)

How did you check your blood sugar levels? blood test, I assume...

*No insurance is a ******

you should get that checked out. if you know someone who has a glucose meter you can check it that way. it's just a prick of the finger, no big deal to test it.

Sorry to hear about your blood sugar level. I am not a doctor, but I have done pretty extensive study of a variety of diets.

You should of course follow your doc's advise. However, if at all possible, please consider altering your diet. It may not be too late to reverse your diabetes (I assume it's a type II) purely through diet... otherwise, eventually you'll end up on insulin for life. You are still young. Please do your body a favor and clean up your diet - pleeeeeze. Do it gradually - gradually cut down on carbs in general. Make sure that you get soluble fiber in your diet. Cut back on saturated fat, and substitute olive oil. For protein, you can turn to beans - this gives you both fiber, and doesn't have the nasties of meat. Finally, and this may be the most difficult, but is also the most valuable: cut back on your calories. You can eat a lot - but make sure that your overall calories stay low (i.e. consume low cal food, like veggies). Lose weight - gradually. Excercise no less than 40 minutes a day, no less than 5 days a week. I know I'm asking for a lot, but believe me, your body will thank you for it.

I don't want to knock any drugs (like glucophage), but there are frequently bad side effect, some of which don't show up for years. It's much better to control your blood sugar level with lifestyle changes than with drugs.

Good luck!

If you haven't done so, rid yourself of ever drinking soda again. It's bad for your health.

A regular can of coke contains 39 grams of sugar.
(high fructose corn syrup)

OldCorpse and BestBetter took the words outta my mouth.

Do your body right and it will love you back :)

Best wishes of health dude!

Best to control it while it is still early. I might have been diabetic for years but never knew it. About 10+ years ago I ended up in intensive care for 36 hours with a blood sugar level over 800. They dripped 6 bags of saline (because of dehydration) and 4 bags of insulin. Was in the hospital for 5 days total. Now I am shooting up 4 times a day. Plus the other pills and stuff I have to take. Not fun and not cheap.

Also yes, a few years ago they tightened up the numbers they consider diabetic. Used to be over 140, now they want you under 120.

Hey Ugafan, sorry to hear it man. My Poppa lived with diabetes for over 50 years, but he always hated not being able to enjoy the foods he loved. With that in mind, I'd strongly suggest you clean up your diet and get exercising. I know it seems like a pain, but the restrictions diabetes will put on your lifestyle far outweigh the difficulties you'll face "getting healthy".

I've also done a fair bit of camp counselling with kids with diabetes, and trust me - having to get up once or twice every single night just to keep your blood sugar levels under control is no fun. No fun at all.

I concur with the consensus: clean up your diet. Also, channel your aggression into exercise.

Good luck!

I'm Type-I. You're (I assume) Type-II. Believe me when I say that I tell you this in DVXuser love: CLEAN UP YOUR FRICKIN' ACT NOW! YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE DIABETIC THE REST OF YOUR LIFE! EXERCISE! EAT RIGHT! DO IT!

By getting your diet and physical health in order, you will either greatly reduce your need for medication or eliminate it altogether. If you don't, you could eventually become insulin-dependent, just like a Type-I diabetic.

You have a choice that I don't. Make the right one.

I swear by this. I lost 20lbs and 7% Bodyfat in 90 days and have kept it all off. Last time I weighed 175 was when I was 24 (I am 37).

All of this was accomplished through nutrition; what to eat, when to eat and how much. 5 - 6 meals a day consisting of approximately 350 to 420 calories a meal. (That's 2400 calories a day!) and tons of ice water; a gallon a day.

I accomplished most of this with minimal working out; once I started working out on a more regular basis; diving, tennis, weights, et al it went into overdrive.

My metabolism is like a machine now. I spent the week working on a shoot, eating nothing but crap and am more or less feeling guilt free.

Not only will this give you awesome information on nutrition, but it will educate you as well. It is worth the $30.00 something dollars.

thanks for the support guys. i've stopped drinking soft drinks and gatorade and that's saving me about 1000 calories a day. in retrospect, that was sorta a lot. i'll keep you guys updated for when i drop below 700 pounds.

I follow a low carb diet. I limit myself to 35 grams of carbs per day... it's the only thing that works for me. I eat what I want and lose weight.

The thing is, when I eat a lot of carbs, I feel like total crap. When I cut out the carbs I have so much energy that I feel like running around the block as fast as I can and just punch people as hard as I can while doing so.

I just started this back up a few weeks ago and have lost maybe 6 pounds so far (and I'm far from "fat" - I just detest body fat...). I was on it a while back but I would eat a lot of pepperoni because it's loaded with fat and protein, but my stomach started to feel like s**t and I quit doing it. This time I'm eating mostly steak and have no problems.

I went to the doctor a few years back for some reason while I was on the diet (but it wasn't diet related - I can't remember why though) and my blood pressure, which is usually 140 over something on the carb diet, was about 110 over something - so I know it's the ideal diet for me...

I freakin' laughed out loud on that!
