RODE NTG1 or NTG2?

Hello guys.:)

I've made up my mind, and I want to go for a RODE mic. Now I have to choose between the RODE NTG1 and NTG2. Which one do you think suits me the best? NTG2 seems to be a little more pricey, is it worth the extra $$?:)

The main difference between the NTG1 and 2 is that the 2 can work off a single AA battery in addition to the 48p.

It comes down to a personal preference as to whether that functionality is important for you, but there are uses where it could be a nice function. I've listened to them both and there was not a noticable sound difference to my ears, so pretty much, how important is the ability to run off a battery to you?

I'm kind of a noob on this audio thing. 48p is phantom power, yes? If I can use that, a battery won't be necessary at all. When would I actually need the AA-battery function?

The DVX can supply 48v phantom power the mic, so if you're planning on using it mainly with the DVX, the NTG-2 with its AA battery isn't a necessity. One thing to keep in mind though, is that by supplying power to the mic, you would be using up your on cam battery faster. This may be a problem, but maybe not if you have lots of spare batteries. It would be handy to have the AA battery in situations where you were using a device that didn't supply phantom power to the mic, like some mixers or recorders. Also, if you wanted to not rely on the on camera battery, therefore extending its life. I have a friend who uses the NTG-1, and loves it. And honestly, it's not like it drains your batter THAT much faster if you're powering it through the camera. The NTG-2's main advantage is just having that extra versaility in the power department. Otherwise, they are the exact same mic, and they sound the same. Oh yeah, the NTG-2 is also longer, which could lead to problems when camera mounting it, but I haven't seen one in person so I dont know. I know that my friend has his NTG-1 on camera and I have never seen it poke into the frame..

Thanks guys, NTG-1 it is, then. :)

BTW: Both the NTG-1 and NTG-2 are XLR, right? I don't need any kind of minijack-XLR-adapter to use it on my DVX?

BH usually has some pretty good kits that include a shockmount and short XLR cable, might look into that. Rode also makes a pretty nice furry wind muff for not too much money....

What do you mean when you say an "XLR mic"?? I am interested in getting this Rode mic but I have a Canon GL2. Is it compatible with the GL2? THanks.
