Everything you wanted to know about the Letus Extreme and were too afraid to ask

I think it depends on your import tax of your country. They are not the same as V.A.T. It is extra. So you better check with your local customs office and the type of category it falls under.

I have to check what I paid for my M2. Custom keep it for some days.. And later asked quite a lot of money.
I'll check and I'll tell you

thank you. you have a pm :)

argh...
however i really think that i have to add the VAT (20%) + tax.
So 846 euro + vat(169euro) + tax(50euro) = extreme prize :(

pretty much the same here for gremany :(

but the good side is that the U.S.D is so low at the moment against the Euro. It works out fine. :)

There is now the discount of $300, and they are throwing in a $50 lens support for free for those who buys within this 2weeks ,which makes it even sweeter . :-Laugh(DBG)-1

yes infact i am attracted by this discount...but the final prize is little high

i'am curios to see some footage of letus economy..

Thanks for posting Ryan.
I'm not used with HVX/XH-A1, but with my DVX+M2+Nikons edge to edge sharpness is absolutely there and usable, unlike that on your comparison. Is this simply because we're talking HD instead of SD?

I do not know- there is a lot more forgiveness in SD then in HD, so it could be that you are in SD, but I honestly do not know for sure. I do know that i was never able to get the M2 that I had sharp edge to edge. But some people have been able to.

Well, again I would prefer the lower res on the center of you're M2 grab, but all over the sensor (as I achieve), instead of a higher res only in the center.

(that's not for a "mine adapter is better then yours". I'm just looking for finer adapters and finer picture and my english is too poor to let me explain as I'd like)
Cheers

Agreed. From the adapters that I have used I have never gotten 100% sharpness in the corners, some have been better then others, and I am happy with the Letus Extreme as it is sharper then what I've had in the past.

It is my understanding that the brothers Le will be making all popular lens mounts available over time.

I'm currently shopping for a rod support system to go with the Letus Extreme and I'm a little bit lost. From what I understand, the Cavision "mini-dv rods support" are great and can be adjusted for a good fit BUT they're a bit on the short side (only 10"). Is that right?

Because of this, I'm also considering 45cm Cinevate rails system. Is it possible to match a Letus Extreme with those? From what I understand, because of it's design the Letus needs to be mounted higher then most adapter and also a bit offset on the horizontal plane.

Put simply, I'm looking for some recommendations on a good set of rods for a HVX-Letus extreme-mattebox-followfocus combo, around $300.00 - $400.00. Cavision? Cinevate? Anything else?

I posted this in another thread, but I thought that i should post this here too since this is the "Everything" thread.

I just figured out how to get my HVX, Letus Extreme, and Cavision matte box all to work together. Now it should be said that you can get the matte box to work with just the basic matte box and rails, however the matte box will not go low enough to use any sort of ND grad. So this is my solution & recommendation:

1. Get long rails- at least 18"- I got the 24" rails so that I can use my 135mm and longer lenses on it. (I have the Redrock alunimum rails, however, Cavision will make 24" rails, you just have to specifically ask for them.)

2. Cavision Mattebox and rail system: MB4169H-2M http://www.cavision.com/matteboxes/4x5hs/4x5hs.htm

3. 3x Additional Bracket and T-Part: RSR-15 (it is the bracket on the back that provides additional support to the camera plate.) You will need nuts and screws for these as the bracket is not threaded. http://www.cavision.com/rods/minidvFF.htm

Now that you have all of this gear, here is how to use it:
1. The long rails go in the main plate.
2. Use one of the RSR-15's to provide extra support to the camera plate.
3. Connect the other two RSR-15's using the holes on the top. The two brackets should look like a cross when joined together.
4. Go a head and slide the newly connected bracket onto the long rods. The bottom bracket should hang down.
5. Connect the letus extreme to the rods.
6. Connect your follow focus to the rods.
7. Make sure that the long rods do not extend out past the end of the follow focus ring on the SLR lens.
8. Using the short rods that came with the matte box, put them into the bottom of the newly connected bracket.
9. You can now fit the Cavision matte box onto these lower rails.
10. The height of the mattebox can now be adjusted either via the matte box directly, or via the new bracket you connected to the rails.
11. If you have a longer lens, you can slide the long rails forward to accomedate the lens size.

Here are some pictures of my setup:

Here's one thing about the Extreme that I'd want to let people know -- if you're using Nikon lenses, I strongly recommend getting the locking Nikon mount instead of the reversible Canon/Nikon mount. You should only use the reversible mount if you intend to use Canon lenses and may only rarely use a Nikon. But if your main use is Nikon lenses, by all means get the locking mount.

In the heat of production, when people are paying attention to three or four different things at once, it's possible that a Nikon lens could slip off of the non-locking mount. Don't let that happen to you.

this is what i was worried about... look at all the hoops you have to jump through to get a mattebox on that sucker.... Sigh*..... Either way imma still pick one up....

I think we've confirmed in another thread that there is no horizontal offset, only a 44mm vertical offset with the Letus Extreme.

Ryan,

The set-up looks really good. I just priced out your configuation and it seems like it would push well beyond $1000 for Matte Box, Follow-Focus, 2 sets of rail systems, and the additional brackets -

I think I'm close to finding a more cost effective solution with the IndiRAILS 18" or 30" and the IndiFOCUSpro, I'm just getting hung up on finding a Matte Box that will work with the 35mm lenses AND be height adjustable to mount to the rails....

Point being - I think a Matte Box manufacturer would make a killing here if they could clearly outline their MB offering and its usage with any of the 35mm adapters (and hopefully be a lot less than $500) ;)

Barry,

I got an email from Aaron at Letus Direct that they are doing away with the swappable Nikon/Canon mount. This is still good advice for those using the Canon FD NON-lockable mount since it obviously won't secure the lenses like the Nikon locking will. Just an FYI that they decided to go away from the swappable mount on the Extreme (though I think its still an option on the Economy).

Thanks everyone for being so collaborative!

Respectfully, I don't know why you'd want that double layer setup. It's heavier, more complicated, and totally unnecessary. Here's mine. Again....
