One of the local news stations is looking for a part time news videographer and I was thinking about applying. For anyone who has worked in news, would you recommend it? I don't want to end up getting the job and then absolutely hating it. your thoughts?

What are you dooing now?

And what do you want to be dooing now? in 5 years?

Going to school, doing freelance work and I'm working part time for a production company doing shooting, sound, grip work. I'd like to be working full time with this company eventually

I guess I'm wondering if shooting for a news station would be beneficial or a good experience, or if it would be hellish and a pain in the ass. If anything, it's to make some extra money on the side maybe 2 nights a week.

Go for it. You can always move on when the time comes.

And yes, Shooting news is good experience, it's a whole new ballgame of shooting.

Just remember what mikko said - you can always move on.
Nothing is permanent.

The biggest danger to those types of jobs is getting sucked in for years.
There is alot to learn in a position like that - but don't get complacent.

Good luck.

Well, I went and filled out an app. and dropped off some of my work. I put down that I only wanted to work weeknights in the evening. I don't intend to work in news for years, I just figure it would be a good thing to have on my resume if anything. The more variety, the better.

Stay away. If you dont love news you will hate it. Remember these words.

There is some truth to this.

I wouldn't want to scare you away from a great opportunity, but news operations are notorious for overworking/underpaying their personel, photogs in particular. As a news noob, you would be working the crappiest hours you can possible imagine.

However, you'd get to be working in production, and getting paid for it. There are a lot of guys who make a whole career out of photog'ing news, and they love it. Could be you...don't know until you try.

What about, "what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger"?

I see no reason to give it a shot. Like everyone said, it's not permanent. It can also help your resume (unless you worked there for 1 day, lol)
