Brevis 35 Production Tests: XL1s, XL2, DVX, HVX, VX2100

Good new, Zoostory! I'm one of the beta testers too but I'll have to wait an aditional week because I chose a Canon FD mount. So' you'll be testing it before me. Let us know how it works. One thing I'm sure of is that I won't waste my money with macros. I've seen too many tests full of aweful color ab and barrel distortion. It would be really something if Dennis could get his hands on a Z1/FX1 before he starts shiping though. It's always good to hear it from the masters' mouth what would be the best way to go.

For now, all I can say, APRIL 6th. So, enjoy yourselves you lucky non canond fd mount bastards ;)

wow it almost looks green screened. Thats cool, it had a nice soft, odd look to it.

I really liked the footage (red banding apart). I'm very glad to see that the Brevis ads a little more latitude to the footage (something not all 35mm adapters do).

P.S - I sent you an e-mail this morning, Dennis.

yea they are great cause they compress the contrast.... it makes it eaiser to get more Dynamic range. or well it seems that way.

Dennis the footage look really good. I saw a couple things when watching the footage. The man talking and the camera movement. I'm learning. You are very valuable to a lot of us. Teacher I hope to make you proud.

Kenny...honestly, I'm learning, and very slowly at that. Check out guys like Steve (disjecta) at pinelakefilms.com if you're looking for some artwork.

I fully expect you guys to teach me a lot :-) I can build you a great adapter, but as far as the rest of the artistry using it...I'm a good technical reference...but sorely lacking on the artistry side.

That's not such a bad thing, as there's a lot of joy in learning more.

Dennis, as you asked, I sent you a PM last friday. Did you receive, right? I'm waiting for your answer. Thanks.

Red sweater footage looks fantastic -- the banding is something only an armchair DP would grumble about :) That's the best moving adapter footage I've seen to date.

Yep, all set guys..and thanks. Tomorrow we play with the HVX200...and with luck we'll get some HD streamed out via firewire.

Dennis, if you have the bandwidth, please post the HVX results in full res using the h.264 Quicktime codec (that'll keep it relatively small in size). It's just not going to do it justice if you reduce the frame size. It's all in the details :)

Disjecta did you get issued your HVX yet? somehow i feel panasonic should make you a special edition one......

I'll do my best. I was passed a link over at dvinfo on how to stream HVX200 output from firewire, so hopefully we'll work this out. The cam has no P2 cards, otherwise I'd just dump the footage directly from that.

I'm giving myself a crash course in DVCPRO50 (to tape), and HD streaming over firewire ....

Major issues streaming HD from the HVX. We got it working on a studio (desktop) Mac, so I borrowed a G4 powerbook to do some shooting, but it had FCP 3.0. I don't believe FCP 3.0 supports the HVX. I haven't touched a Mac in years, and FCP, never. So back to the studio with the HVX, and an HD grab using the desktop with obviously a newer version of FCP.

What a beautiful cam! The focus assist (only in HD :( ) and controls on the camera are a joy to use. I figured out enough to get manual control, and mess with shooting modes, but otherwise, I'd assume the cam is at default settings.

Here is some quick footage from the HVX using plain old SD, 30P. I ended up using a weak macro to get proper framing in 16:9 mode. Our first test was definitely done in 4:3, and in that mode, no macro is required.

And somewhat unrelated, some crops from a test comparing 35mm lens barrel distortion. The Brevis has none, my 50mm F1.4 has quite a bit. This is an excellent reminder of why you need to eliminate the video camera and 35mm lens from the equation when troubleshooting adapter issues.

holy crap is that direct sunlight on that tricycle seat? and its not blowing out?!
