1080p or 720pN

Hey guys, I'm new to shooting HD and all it's specs, rez, etc. So, my question is: Which mode would be best to shoot my feature on? 1080p or 720pN?

Barry Green, if you happen to see this, your suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Going to Thailand to shoot 1/3 of a feature using the HPX500. Heard lots of great things about it so I hope it doesn't fail me...or I don't fail to use its great capabilities. It's a film festival project and I plan to master it in HD for HD projection...so, 1080p or 720pN?

Forgive me if someone had already ask this question some where. Thanks a bunch.

1080 will give you the best resolution and the sharpest picture for any kind of blow up. Unless there is a pressing need for you to shoot 720pn, I would probably stick with 1080/24pa. 4 16 gig cards in the hpx is an hour of 1080 anyways.

true about the rez.

bear in mind that in 720pn you get nearly 3 hours of record time!!

So the questions really are how time do you need and how much storage space do you have, because in 1080 you are storing a LOT of stuff you don't need.

The *only* reason to choose 720pN for the bulk of your film (i.e., not slow-mo stuff) would be if you need additional recording time. Other than that, 1080/24pA is better in all ways.

* edited to add: okay, one other time: if you edit with Avid, 720pN will make for an easier time because Avid doesn't yet support 1080/24pA pulldown removal, IINM.

Thanks very much guys. Really appreciate your advices. 1080pA it is. I just hope the 500 won't give me any technical nor archiving into hard drive problems while in Thailand. It's a long way from civilization where I'm shooting.

so by removing the pulldown during ingestion does the 1080 footage then become 24p "N" (so to speak) like the 720pn . meaning free of any interlacing and totaly progressive. no difference other than resolution?

Oh, well yes. 24p is 24p. The 1080 just happens to be in a 60i stream, but the same frames taken out in cam for pN will be taken out in the computer from pA.

This is all very interesting discussion.

I too am coming into this brave new world with lots of questions. I have been shooting PD-150's and 170's without the luxury of variable frame rates and resolutions.

Is there a book or DVD that someone can point me to that will demystify many of the questions that someone new to the 500's could benefit from?

My apologies for hijacking the thread, but it sounded like a reasonable question given the topic of discussion.

Thanks,
Brad

The HVX Book is about 95% applicable to the HPX500. There are a few small differences, things that the 200 does differently than the 500, but for the most part anything in The HVX Book has a direct bearing on what the HPX500 does.

with pulldown remember the following

24 true frames is 24 true frames
24P is an approximation with a 2:3 cadence but you cannot exactly extract the true 24 frames from this - this cadence plays better then 24PA if you do not remove the pulldown because of the regular cadence
24PA is with a 2:3:3:2 cadence and allows an exact pixel for pixel extraction of the 24 frames with no approximation. This means it is better if you know you will be distributing in a 24 frame format such as film. But without removing pulldown some say you see the "uneven" cadence - though I am not sure if you really can

there are many descriptions on how the pulldown is done on the internet

Am I missing something here???

I can't find anything about 1080 progressive on the HPX neither advance nor native.

It shoots it. You're talking about the HPX500, right? Not native though. That's reserved for 720p... You can shoot 24p, or 24pa in 1080. or, of course 30p, 60i..... Unless I'm missing something :) I was under the impression that it shoots all modes the HVX200 does.

Jason

yes every mode that the hvx does - and yes FOR SURE it shoots 1080 24p and 1080 24 PA - which is 24P with pulldown.

I am positive - I just shot a whole feature in that mode

According to my manual, the 500 shoots:
1080/60i
1080/24p (over 60i)
1080/24pA (over 60i)
1080/30p (over 60i)

I haven't done any 1080 stuff yet as I still don't have my cards.
