$1650 for 32gig P2

1993, I remember my first apple mac [and only to date] was a performer 630, 4 MB ram doubled via software [heck it was slow] with a 250 Mb HD...

At the time in college we were learning DTP on apple mac IIs and we spent half of the two hour lesson loading quark express into ram because there weren't any hard drives.... an application that fitted onto a floppy disk, OMG !!!!

My first video I cut on my home mac was 320x240 sized video for my portfolio [I was a designer and did a reel to get people interested in my design work]. Had some early chromakey stuff in Premiere 4.0 at the time...

It was a Cinepak compressed quicktime [20:1], 20 megabytes big and the picture quality was awful but for its time it looked great...!

It worked and bagged me my first commercial job, even though my designs weren't that good. They were amazed that someone was doing desktop video.

Here we are 14 years later and my current computer is editing HD. WTF? That is some crazy S^&t.

I love it !

My next mac will come later next year... til then I use a PC at home and a mac at work...

Or something like that :Drogar-BlackEye(DBG

Possibly from "Blazing Saddles", if my hazy memory serves me...

Raising Arizona, actually.

"...and when there was no meat, we ate fowl
and when there was no fowl, we ate crawdad
and when there was no crawdad to be found, we ate sand."

"You ate what?"

"We ate sand."
[pause]

"You ate SAND? "

I was watching Resevoir Dogs the other day, theres a scene where Nice Guy Eddie is driving down the street with a huge a$$ cell phone talking to "the boss"

That was done in like what 93'? And here we are 14 years later and we've got an IPHONE that is 1/10th the size of that thing, plays widescreen video, music, internet, camera/camcorder!

Now thats exponential growth!

I learned to program BASIC on a TRS-80 . . . given to me by my ex-father in law.

I remember his first "cell phone" (also from Tandy), looked like a suitcase, and I thought that was so cool -- something like $1999 at the time.

(Sorry, I forget this thread was about the price of P2's). Weren't the 8 gig cards initially announced at $2800 or am I dreaming?

P.S. That's not really me in the avatar.

As I recall, back in January 2006, the 8GB P2 cards were $2,200 or $275 per GB. (This assumes you could even get them.)

With a 32GB at $1650, that comes to about $51.56 per GB. That's a price drop of around 1/5th the price per GB in slightly under 2 years.

Moore's Law (as well as market forces) are still in "play", so I expect to see additional price drops in the coming years.

So this price tells us that the 16gb cards will stay at pretty much the same price they are now when the 32s are released?

Nope, it just tells us that 16gb and 32gb cards will probably cost about 1/5th of what they do now in about 2 years time.
Around then we should have 128gb cards - that will probably cost a couple of grand.

It's a safe bet, that over time, the price per GB of memory will continue to drop.

In addition, other forces start to come into play here; the market. Sony is introducing a camera the uses flash memory SxS (S by S) and this puts pressure on Panasonic to keep prices of memory down so that new buyers won't switch to Sony.

In addition, as the number of P2 cameras increases, the cost for making P2 cards decreases. Larger production batches = lower costs per unit.

Keep in mind that the 16GB card did not start out selling for $1,650. When I first read about it coming out for $900, I assumed that was a mis-print.

We're also reaching a point where the amount of memory is enough for a day's shoot. We're not there yet, but just wait a few years...

With two 128GB P2, that comes to slightly over 4 hours at the maximum data rate. When I shoot a weeding for friends or family, most of the time, I don't need more than 2 hours of video. Granted, everyone's needs are different, but as memory size increases, more and more users will find that the smaller size P2 is big enough for them. It will take a few more years, but that day will come...

It's the fishing shows that baffle me. I mean, *actually* fishing is boring enough as it is (which, in fairness, is part of the appeal of it - being in that zoned-out fisherman's headspace), but watching it on TV? Holy mackerel...(cough)...

What's next - Wine Aging Shows?

How about: Lawn Growth: The Miniseries?

"The little Computer that could!"

Ha! That's right, Timur!

Amiga 1000 was the first, followed by the 500 and the 2000. I had the use of a neighbor's 1000 and my own 500, followed by a 4000, then jumped ship to mac. They were pretty amazing machines for the time, but they fell behind towards the end.

That's essentially correct. Here's a quick history lesson:
