My short film Versus

I almost never have any work to post so this is a nice change. A 3 minutes short film, shot in a day and edited in a weekend. Shot 24p SD on the A1 to save on rendering time.

I made this for the Berkeley Campus Movie Fest. Went into it not having any substantial idea so I decided to string together a bunch of FX through a simple story. Many of you will noticed that most of these effects are from Andrew Kramer's tutorials. Big big thanks to him, of course.

Oh, and there's a few bloopers at the end after the credit. They're hilarious, trust me.

A few grabs

at 1:11 it freezes, i hear noise, and then a few seconds later it all goes green ?

doesnt freeze.

Nice, but really NO story :) The slap in the face was funny *g*

The music is too loud compared to the dialogue. Hard to understand.

then i will try to redownload it. Never experienced this from a download before.

That's what I get for trying to edit without a reference monitor, lol. Tried to kept the audio level between -6 and 0db as best I could using a 7506 headphone instead of my crappy speakers. Odd, when I listened to it there is no clipping.

Pretty fun, jade. The dialogue audio levels were just the biggest problem, in my opinion, as far as production goes.

From the sounds of it, and knowing you, you probably did the best you could with the time you had and know where the problems areas are.

Thanks mayodaze:). I can go back and do a remix of the sound although I really have no idea how it going to come across to your speakers. Listening with a 7506, the current mix is acceptable to my ears. I guess I should add a good pair of speakers to my wish list :(.

I really learned a lot from this actually, the biggest thing being how good lighting can affect the image. Look at the 4th grab on there in comparison with the other 3 for example. We were high up in the mountains and it was a VERY foggy day. Then for about an hour the clouds parted and the sun shoned through and it was just beautiful. Literally a night and day difference in term of sharpness, color reproduction and general "film" quality.

I'm also very pleasantly surprised at the quality of the A1's SD 24p image. Forget all the talks about losing resolutions via the interlaced chip. This is as sharp an image as any I've ever seen and the amount of details that "pop" out is unbelievable.

Is it recommended to monitor audio levels with speakers? I also monitor audio in editing with 7506s.

Reference speaker is the way to go. It's hard to tell what frequency I should be boosting or suppressing. That's why the dialogs sounds fine to my ear but may sound muddle on someone else's speaker.

Not too bad... His audio levels are defintely clipping but her's seem to be 'ok'... Nice chain of effects... Hooray for creative cow, Andrew Kramer, and video copilot.... : )

Where did you get the high res images that you used for the earth zoom?

I used Google Earth. It turns out that the Save As option on there will take the picture that correspond to the current resolution of your screen. Mine was about 1200 x 1000. It's actually not all that high res; I added quite a bit of motion blur and the zoom went so fast you can't really tell.

Thanks for letting me know. How did you do the spots on the building that looked like the characters?

I ask because I'm trying to recreate this effect, but actually have the zoom come down to camera level. No idea if I'll actually be able to pull it off, though.

To be honest I got lucky that the satellite pictures happen to have people there in the same place. But I'm sure that the people can easily be photoshop in as they're basically black smudges.

For your effect I would think you'll have to get a crane of some sort to get an overhead view of the scene and use the live footage as the first layer.

you should see Ryuhei Kitamura's Versus. you would like it?

Actually I did saw it and I couldn't hate it more. Kitamura spent a ridiculous amount of time building up the fight scenes, but couldn't deliver a payoff. A huge section of the movie is devoted to "cool" introductory shots of opponents facing each other, but the actual fight itself lasted seconds. It's just very frustrating watching something like that, and it made the film felt very long.

Just want to let you guys know I went back and did some re-cutting. Fixed up the sounds and messed with the shots a bit. Hopefully this version is better. Check it out! Same link at the top of the page.
