New Music Video HVX+Brevis, Clowns+Animals

Okay so this has been a bad summer for me and filmmaking. This was one of the only things I was able to shoot. Did this for a local band that I'm friends with... on a very low budget. Our 3 day shoot got rained on and was turned into a 2 day shoot.

I had absolutely no crew which made things difficult with the brevis and other equipment, I could have really used at least an ac. Thats why I think I rushed through parts and didn't do as well as I could on the DP side of things. I'm not blaming the budget or the lack of crew... just saying that I didnt take my time and do everything completely right all the time.

So without too much more of a prequel I guess I'll just say that I'm really not that happy with how this turned out because I think it could have been a lot better, but still I think it might be one of my better(if not best) videos(which is kind of depressing)

Still, please take a look and let me know what all of you think. We are releasing it on the bands myspace tomorrow, so I'd really like to get some good critiques

Thanks

Chris

funny! Good concept.

Some of the shots were over exposed (ligting) but i thing you did well with what you were working with.

Keep it up :)

Anytime you beat up clowns I'll say "Job well done!"

(I hate clowns).

It's not bad dude, it's fun.

Hey,

Thanks for the feedback guys. I agree on the overexposed thing to some extent although *some* of it was intentionally done in post. I added a glow to some of the shots which made some areas selectively blow out to try and give the piece a little more magical feel(ex...the glow behind them as they walk down the alley). But some of the single shots of the Bassist and guitarist are blown out and don't look all that great. My biggest wish is that I could have gotten the sky exposed instead of blowing it out...that to me always looks amateurish but...o well...next time.

Would love some more people to take a look at it and let me know what you think.

Chris

Ya, dont be so hard man. You did a great job. Loved the suchs and the coloring. That Brevis is a Beauty. The intro might have been a bit tad to long, but it didn't bother me. Nice

Thanks Como...In the actual release(for the band) we are cutting off part of the intro and starting on the shot of them walking down the alley. I just liked the shots of them playing so I'm keeping it in for an extended version. Their manager thought the same thing which is why we're cutting it down

Chris

By The way...what are suchs? typo or something i don't know about?

I thought it was badass as hell. People use the term "fun" a lot when describing their videos, but this actually was a "fun" video. The energy of it all and the charisma of the lead singer in the performance footage. I don't know. I just dug the hell out of it. Watched it like 5 times.

So props. Great video.

Loved the band and the video !
You really need to watch the blown out colors and skys it just looks cheap. Nothing that a matte box and some ND grad filters wouldn't solve though.
Some shots were stunning well done you !
Love the brevis and will be getting one soon, what were you using to monitor with ? Looked nice and sharp anyway. Also what settings in camera were you on, detail etc.

Fluffy Animals vs Clowns & Jesters, great stuff!

Same comments as above, regarding the highlights and brightness. Using a glow effect can be addictive, once you start.

Haha yes...too true...I think the glow worked in most of the shotsjust because I think it added to the "magical" atmosphere but in most videos I wouldn't do that. As for the skies...unfourtunately I blew them out in camera and I hate myself for it but I learn and move on I guess. Can't afford a mattebox and filters right now(completely broke/in debt)...can't even afford a followfocus or rails for the brevis...eek. But next time i might try some cheap screw on ND filters and play around alot more with settings in cam...as I said, live and learn.

Jeff, thanks for the compliment...I think it made my day! Really glad you liked it... I really did want this to be just a fun video

4mat: Brevis is pretty easy/nice and I'm using the marshall monitor but beware...I have yet to find a good way to mount it though...have my precious marshall mounted on a $20 piece of plastic that swings around and...its scary as hell. AFter you buy the brevis theres alot of accessories that you really want/need to make the kit funcional...some of which I have...others I don't. Also as for camera settings... I pumped the sharpness a bit because I wanted it to have a nice sharp look to it because I thought it added to the whole feel I was going for...I really need to learn more about the gamma and other settings though.

Thanks for the comments guys... Anything else beyond the blown out highlights/colors... the way I see it is that this video is what it is...but I can always learn for next times.

Thanks

Chris

I really liked it. The whole clown thing is funny. enjoyable. That Brevis is a great adapter. I don't think it gets its just due.

BTW, I loved seeing the clowns get there _sses kicked.

Good job man.

I thought it was cool and I really like the colors except for the red on the bird was WAAAY too high in chroma. I liked the red noses flying off in slow-mo and wished to see more of that type of stuff. Like maybe balloons and other clown stuff flying around.

I loved it! Lol!

I always wonder what the pitch is like for something like that: "OK, I was thinking that you guys would wear silly animal costumes and then get in a fight with these clowns. What do you think?"

As far as technical critique goes, I did notice a dirty lens shot and the colors were a little hot, as Beat said (red bird). But I think the piece was about pushing the extreme a bit far, and it works.

Tell me how wide your wide angle lens was?

I hope I am not going too far with this post. I do like the song, the edit and footage, it's super cool fun. If you are going to broadcast this, perhaps the last few comments about chroma and luminance may save a broadcaster putting a dirty global limiter over the whole clip, which can muddy it up, etc.

Whilst you applied the glow, you probably have source files that are not so hot. That said, if you did blow some footage out when recording to camera, detail is lost, can't be recovered. Unless you take this into a compositing app and apply different methods of correcting each clip, one quick way this can be done in your favourite NLE is with the Tint effect. You can not recover the detail, you can reduce the hot spots by either tinting it a greyscale tone or tint to a colour. I chose to go amber in my example below, and the tint blend reduced the luminance (and chroma) below 100 IRE.

There are different ways to do this, and mine is just one, and not necessarily the correct or best way. I share this, because I have seen some funky broadcast results, and even rejections from broadcasters, if you are outside broadcast limits.

PS the best glow filter in the world is Boris colorise glow and just by chance it will pull everthing into broadcast safe zones if you use it right.

Thanks for the in depth post Christopher...and also about the red on the bird...it was pretty out of control...had to keep it within reason without making everything else look bland.

So here is a before and after set of stills from the clown shot. There is a little blown out in the original but not much... I desaturated and added a cool feel to everything but the reds and then added a little glow to make the clown stand out more. This shot the blow outs don't really bother me and I guess I'd say they are intentional because I think they make the clown look more extreme.

I will however keep this stuff in mind for some of the otehr shots and if this ever gets a shot at broadcast. Right now I don't think thats a real possibility though :( This is really just a myspace release, the band are friends of mine(very talented though) and they dont yet have a label or anything so the vid probably won't go anywhere.

Oh and also you will notice some ground glass patterns on this shot...the brevis was turned on but I found out later was malfunctioning and NOT vibrating :( I think this was because I had a heavy lense on without any rails or anything.(can't afford them)

Also...my widest lens is a 20mm

Chris
