All Hallows Fest

"in the film" simply means that it has to be clearly visible in a shot somewhere. The context in which it's presented is irrlevant.

I hope you allow more than one file format. I request .mov

Also does someone know the best place to download H.264? I guess I could just buy QT 7Pro.

Can I get some clarification on the rules.... or maybe this is just a general qualification question.

I've just shot my short film and it's actually double the time limit allowed (time limits are very restricting). Can I cut it down to the 5 min limit and enter part of the full film? What if it's entered in 2 different festivals at the same time, one 5 min version here and one full length version at the other? They have a very different meaning between the 2 versions and so would also have 2 different titles.

I'm not one of the fest masters, so this is unofficial until Barry_S or Larry_R confirm or deny:

You *can* cut the film down to fit the time restriction, though I wouldn't recommend it. As Barry Green said earlier in this thread somewhere that perhaps that film isn't meant for this fest. Better to do something that fits the time restrictions of the fest more appropriately. Seems like you might be shooting yourself in the foot a bit there (but that's just personal opinion).

You may enter the film in other festivals so long as it is NOT publicly screened prior to this fest finishing.

It actually works really well in its 5 min form... more like 4:30. I'm actually surprised by that... sort of, not really. I understand the "NOT publicly" part for other fests, but what if it's a different cut at the same time or before and with a different title? 2 whole characters were cut in the shorter version.

You'll probably want to ask Barry_S for clarification on that. You might want to pm him about it as your question starts to get a little more gray and only he or Larry R could answer it definitively.

Later,
Jason

Directly from the rules---"...no actual footage from films may be screened prior to the DVXuser screening".

You're free to enter in other fests prior to All Hallows Fest, as long as noting is screened before the fest.

I have a few questions here:

Q1: What If my shoot is less than 5min. ? (A stupid question, but I still need a nod)
Q2: Other Festivals do apply the same rule i.e. Must not be screened publicly before! I'm willing to submit my short to other festivals and they may reject my short due to the public screening at DVXFest! Isn't it a rigid rule for any fest ?
Q3: I'm willing to show it to my office collegues i.e. a close-house screening. Can I do that ?
Q4: Red Wine is not accessible here in Pakistan. I may use Red Grape juice instead. Is it OK ?
Q5: Is it really necessary to look like a Red Wine, can't I make it any red liquid of varying thickness or viscosity ?
Q6: I want to make my title and credits a bit longer than 10-sec. time. Can I do that ?
Q7: It is not possible for me to buy Instand-HD or anything which can make my 4:3 letter-boxed footage into 16:9. Why can't I send it as 4:3 only ? Same applies to PAL/NTSC standard ...
Q8: What video format is required to upload my short i.e. .mov, .wmv or .mp4 etc. ? (I guess anything should be accepted ...)
Q9: Is there anything more to upload with the short-video file ?
Q10: Is it possible to promote/sponsor the first-three winning shorts in all other festivals by the DVXUser.com ?
Q11: What's the difference between horror & hallow ? (Coz my short is kinda horror ...)

Note: I request you to finalize/freeze the set of rules as soon as possible ...

Thanks -

Q1: Les than 5 minutes is cool.
Q2: Varies by the fest.
Q3: No problem.
Q4: Grape juice ok for "dry" countries and counties :) It's just a prop.
Q5: See above.
Q6: Please try to keep credits to 10-sec max. Title is in addition to credits, but it should be brief.
Q7: Whatever program you use to create your web file should allow you to crop to 16:9.
Q8: We'll announce exact specs, but H.264/MPEG 4/AVC is the format.
Q9: No.
Q10: Not sure what you mean, can you elaborate?
Q11: All Hallows+darkness is a theme or motif, horror is a genre. Horror fits.

spooky138 Rules! & Thanks Barry ... "Dry Country!" I like the term, has been used a-lot ... OK ... let me clear you my Q7, Q8 & Q10 here with elaborations:

Q7: Is it possible for DVXUser.com to provide services of up-converting 4:3 footage to 16:9 ... As any stretching literally causes a total (almost) visual chaos ?

Q8: The possible desired format can only be acquired by QuickTime Pro ... A luxury I can't afford ! Is it possible for DVXUser.com to provide this service as well ?

Q10: For the 3 Winners of DVX All Hallows Fest ... The winning shorts should be promoted, sponsored and screened by the DVXUser.com in all possible festivals around the world ... That would be the finest prize for the winners of this fest ... Is it a possibility ?

Thanks once again !

Note: If I'm asking too much ... do mention it as well ...

There are 80 movies sometimes. Doing this FOR you is impractical. Tell people what your NLE is and / or what compression software you are using and they will help you figure out how to do it yourself. try searching first becasue likely there are several threads that address how to do this.

Q8: The possible desired format can only be acquired by QuickTime Pro ... A luxury I can't afford ! Is it possible for DVXUser.com to provide this service as well ?
You might get a user to do this for you. But there is no staff at DVXuser to do this for you. Also, without knowing more about your NLE and your compression software it may not be true at all that you can only deliver a 16X9 dot mov with QT pro.
Q10: For the 3 Winners of DVX All Hallows Fest ... The winning shorts should be promoted, sponsored and screened by the DVXUser.com in all possible festivals around the world ... That would be the finest prize for the winners of this fest ... Is it a possibility ?
Prizes are donated. The one thing no one has anymore of to donate is time. Promoting a winning film as a winning film all around the world would be the filmmaker's responsibility. Also entering 3 films in all major festivals all over the world would quickly become more expensive than the most extravagant prize we've ever had.

Basically, if you are not getting the gist, this is a FREE contest run by VOLUNTEERS. I am sure you are appreciative of that fact, but you are already being given a bounty by being allowed to participate for free in an event that is very time consuming to organize. Can you imagine if 80 people just dumped their films on Barry and Larry in whatever format and asked them to mod them into the correct festival format.?

Thanks once again !

Note: If I'm asking too much ... do mention it as well ...

mmmm ... Maybe. :) But no one will hold it against you. Members will gladly help you figure out how to get your film uploaded in the proper format, but the festival organizers should not be asked to actually do it for you. Same goes for pimping your movie all over the world after the festival.

Looking forward to your entry.
