What are people cutting on?

I used to use FCP. I use Avid Xpress Pro HD as of now. I just like it better.

Running on a PC although I'd prefer a Mac.

FCP all the way.
Alot complain about not editing original MXF files, but I see them as masters. FCP unwraps to QT while I'm still logging other shots. I just don't get the big deal. I like editing completely non-destructively.

of course this is true David,
But sometimes files get corrupt though. not edting my master MXF files gives me extra sense of security.

If that's what you like, then so be it. People like what they like.

It's a pretty simple and quick thing just to make an extra copy of your Contents folder, though . . .

Edius handles P2 material better than any editor, and by a lot when you factor in the use of meta data, etc..

Aside from that, it's not the best editing tool. Reminds me too much of Avid Liquid.

What? Those are the two I use. I use Edius to work with 720pn footage. And I use Liquid for PAL. The 1080i stuff is a mix depending on the project.
Liquid is a totally different approach. IMO it is better than Edius. And way better than FCP.

I am not merely editing "films" but also TV shows, event videos, sports-features for networks (heavy use of After Effects there). Often a project has new demands and then I use the software I think does that particular job best. If you for example have to import a lot of files from different shooters: Edius beats them all. If you batch capture from decks...Liquid is rocksolid in doing it and keeping track of all the media.

Once Liquid supports 720pn I will probably move more to Liquid again. Now I am about 60% Edius, 40 Liquid, because I use 720 more than 1080.

To say Edius reminds you of Liquid is saying a Ferrari reminds you of a Hummer, because they have a similar pricetag. But it depends if you go on a rough trip or a speedtrack to decide what you use.
Liquid is a database within an editor. It does background rendering, has a fixed GUI that is very slick and clean. It is grown up and is used in many big studios in Europe (often as FAST Chrome, but it is the same). The new Liquid chrome does HDSDI I/O for a very competitive price.
Edius is a young editor with growing pains, it just got a cleaner GUI, but still is a bit messy at times. It is great at having different formats thrown at it and giving back in others (e.g. I do P2 - XDCam; shoot P2HD and deliver XDCamSD)

Any software can do the job. Some better some worse. The next day it might be different, so go look and see what you like and use it.

If Liquid is your thing, then more power to you. I used it for a couple of years, and it's just not my thing -- even though I'd agree it's more powerful than Edius, especially for its excellent color correction tools (probably the best of any NLE).

But interface-wise, transition-wise, etc., Edius does remind me of things I didn't like about Liquid.

Mixing 24p and 24pN Footage

Mixing 24p and 24pN Footage

A very intersting discussion going on hear. I am a greenhorn so please bear with me. Looking for clarification on an editing solution.

I am shooting a piece and I want to make sure I won't give the editor fits. I will be shooting with a Varicam at 720 24p and an HVX200 at 720 24pN. Once the DVVPro-HD tape from the Varicam is digitized will it play nice in an FCP timeline with the 24pN footage from the HVX? Will this work on an Avid?

I have never attempted this and won't have time to run an experiment. Thanks.

yes it will but what avid are you talking about
I plead ignorance to what Avid. The FCP equivalent that a quality freelance editor would use.
I appreciate your response - it relieves a bit of the tension. When I realized both cameras use the same codec I figured I was in the clear.
Best

FCP all the way. We also had an Edius set-up for awhile but
we did not like it. Now you can use Raylight for the MAC and
edit directly. No transfer and wrap. All modes and frame rates.
And we can hire a P2 wrangler - all of them we have hired
know FCP. When you ask them about PC editing a look
of horror comes across their faces.

AVID XPress Pro, Adrenaline and Nitris. Have been using XPress at home for over 5 years and wouldn't change it for anything else, I have tried others. And, Oh yeah, PC all the way. I like to be able to "get under the hood" of my machines.

EDIUS Broadcast for now... In terms of p2 workflow it's the best out there. Not pc hungry either (well... depending) with p2 footy.
