SCENE FILE X-CHANGE test site is up...

... i do though have to admit. im a little bit leery about the willingness of the community to PROVIDE settings. in well over 200 views of this thread (and more of the site itself) NOBODY has sent me emails with files...

Have patience, it will catch on.

Maybe it takes a thousand views before someone else puts some up, but I think it will happen. Maybe a lot of people, myself included, think they don't have an awesome scene file to contribute.

I think it's a little unreasonable to assume the 1st 500 HVX owners or enthusiasts that see this thread or the site will have scene file settings to share or that they feel are worth sharing or that they have time to share right this second.

Maybe some folks are intimidated by the really nice professional photos you put up showcasing the scene files and think they can't share theirs unless they go to the trouble to stage something like that.

Dunno, just saying is all.

I think people really like the idea and it will catch on, eventually.

i also think the case is that alot of people shoot the images clean inorder to preserve the most information and allow the greatest latitude of change in post. I myself am very hesitant to drastically alter the style in camera, in order to avoid being locked into the altered settings that may minimize certain information - which could be helpful in post. Not to mention it is so easy to obatin most of those looks in post if you shoot it right!

How many parameters are there anyway? A dozen? I haven't had much luck getting the variety of colors like the shots you've got without cc in post.

It will definitely take some time for people to start sharing but good things come to those who wait. My last shoot was the first time I really tweaked the crap out of my scene setting for a music vid. Having a paint box would be really cool that wrote to a scene file as you tweaked.

Hey, nice work! Hope this is a success, because I think it's a great idea.

Seeing as we can't have the same image for each scene file it would be cool if we were able to roll over each image to see it in the factory default settings... Don't know how easy that would be to set up. Would save screen real estate as opposed to having two images side by side.

Also, details on how to install them into the camera would be helpful. :D

the whole source /effected/common image is more or less a non-starter as far as i know. thats not really how things work with the hvx (or any other camera)...

im not sure we can make our camera act like photoshop??? thats just not the way things work... but i'll give it a whirl! maybe a best guess guestimate based on photoshop actions, but thats hardly going to be real-world...

This is where the 'scene file editor' would come in. One of the ideas I made at the time it kicked off was to be able to 'design' a look in it, based on a default loaded image (it would build an internal LUT to best match the HVX settings), with a small user defined preview image. If you could then spit an image out of this you'd have your preview image to post on the site.

Unfortunately this requires a colour/panasonic engineer to come up with the scene file workings, and I'm neither of these.

What happened to the 'scene file editor' by the way, as it was nearing completion the last I heard (but only on PC)?

If you could link all this together on the site...

The next best solution is for a frame grab from each person who submits a scene file, showing it's look, which is going to be the least hassle for you to implement. We end up with a multi-coloured preview list, but it shows each in the circumstance it was intended for.

prototype version2.0 is live. i think ive included most of the change requests you all had asked for - aside from the high tech back-end programming stuff (we'll get to that over time if the site generates enough interest)

http://understandinc.com/hvx_scenes.html

you can now click the small thumbnail image to go to a page with a larger image and a matrix of settings and well as see other files by that author.

still needs a little cosmetic tweaking here and there but it seems to be working... as always, ready for all input!

CORRECTION: the actual downloadble scene files and scene matrix content that was live earlier today has been pulled out after i was told that it was used without specific permission. i have other live files that i will be posting tomorrow and as always greatly welcome new submissions!

It would be good to have RSS feeds so we can see immediately when new scenes are available using a program such as Thunderbird.

Also, Have you set up a database/dynamic code or is it all just done in straight HTML?

Finally, check the site in Firefox. It has some formatting issues it didn't have in the earlier version.

Source code looks like straight HTML. Also well structured... with some lazyness in the middle :D

You should look for some table formatting, that might be the problem. I will also have a short look.

nomis and brian - good points. and i will be taking care of these issues but i think we may be talking about the color of the kitchen before we have the drywall up. we need to keep in perspective that this whole effort is being done only as a "proof of concept" and in about 6 hours (including design time). it has to walk before it can run. and right now its only at crawl state, so i have little interest at the moment in buying it gym shoes - if you get my drift ; )

all that aside, im a little disappointed in that in over 700 views, 32 replies and well over 800 site visits - i have had all of 2 scene files sent to me (thanks to barry and re1000 for those!). i dont know if its a situation of people not wanting to share their tools (which i guess i could understand to a degree) or if its a matter of folks not really knowing how to manage files from camera to card to computer... which i also totally understand

im starting to think that in the long run, the interest in the site may be heavily stilted toward taking and super lean on the giving... in which case it may end up as a dead-effort (as other efforts in the past have been)

Sorry to ask..but what are the X's for? there isnt much information on how to get those looks..no numbers or anything.

Give it time wgzn. Like Jack said. Just keep pluggin' away. Give it time. It will probably take a while to build up a decent library of scene files, but once the site does finally get to that point, it'll probably take off even more. Probably, there are a lot more people wanting good scene files than there are people with good scene files to share.

blckhawk: The x's are there b/c those aren't real scene files yet. Just 'placeholders'. At least, that's my guess.

and, p.s.... you're off to a good start if Barry Green has sent you scene files, man. Just keep pluggin' away. I know there are a lot of people who would like to see this thing survive.

Jason

thanks jason. i dont plan to give up - even if i have to become a ninja scene file developer myself just to populate the thing.

yeah blckhawk, what happened was that all those were indeed real scene files with full numeric content and downloads but i was informed that the files i took from the card i was sent werent the ones i was supposed to have used and [for reasons i didnt ask] the creator didnt want them distributed so i had to yank the content out.

i'll be doing some digging this weekend and will try to have a few real scene files up early next week.

stay tuned! and as always, all comments and suggestions are welcome... ; )

i should have a new version up by mid week. and i have the back end programming to automate user file upload figured out, but its going to cost me about a grand to get it up and running - im a little hesitant to blow a grand on something that so far hasnt had much interest...

but i kinda think IF the process were automated, more folks might be willing to upload -

any thoughts?
