End Of Life for 8GB p2 Card - Discontinued

I just received an email from my Panasonic distributor, ProMedia in Memphis.

Basically, Panasonic had discontinued the 8GB p2 card due to "overwhelming demand
for P2 HD camcorders and orders for P2 cards with larger capacity."

Now, I wonder (hopefully) that the company will start to ramp production.

Did they actually make any or ship any when the 16gb's were being shipped out? I didn't think so, but i'm not sure.

I don't know for sure, but I recall that Panasonic did have problems getting 8GB P2 cards together.

Who knows, maybe the 32GB will start to come out in December 2007 and there's just no point for the 8GB anymore. After all, considering the cost per GB, the 16GB is the better deal.

I just checked the Hoodman site, and they now say that their 16GB H2 cards will be out in Q4 2007.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is another product that sounded promising when it was first announced, but will never see the light of day. Panasonic has beat them with 16GB cards, the 32GB cards could well be out by Q4, and if the H2 cards slip again, Panasonic-branded cards with even higher capacity may be out.

I wouldn't expect Hoodman to beat Panny on capacity - but they could still beat them on price.

all i know is that the 32gig card is perfect for me. And once the 128 comes out, that will be the next purchase.

Sold my 4's back in May when the new prices were announced for 8's and 16's.
Replaced 'em with 8's (even at a slightly less attractive cost per gig) because I could actually get them--and have shot quite a bit since then. While I welcome/look forward to the higher capacities (and their eventual availability) I'm still happy with my decision . . . I like the upload times via P2Genie and the ability to back 'em up to DL DVD's when I am away and can't use my LTO-2 tape for archive.
