Skate movie

I totally agree with you Justyn fisheye are overused and aren't creative. Many snowboard and wakeboard movie director's understood it and now shoot on film. It's much more difficult to try to find a good angle with a film camera and play with the focus that go at the bottom of the stairs with your fisheye. I mean anyone would be able to film a fap with a fisheye after an hour of pratice.

i posted a while ago on this and am amazed at what people have written since. skatetpcdotcom is almost as on the money as possible. obviously there's no denying that fisheyes can be and are overused (almost never in anything thats any good), but to insist that they are a cop out for a more interesting shot is just stupid. unless maybe we should start renting 80' jib arms that can duck under bridges and follow skaters around poles and cars. snowboarders and wakeboarders have switched? BECAUSE THEY CAN. try angling, setting up a 16mm rig, metering, and focusing while security stands 20 feet away waiting to kick you out before you even get a single try. notice that 99% of 16mm in skate videos is intro material (and a friend of mine who has shot 16 for transworld and said someone metered while everyone waited in the bushes before running out to try and get the shot). im not arguing with different mediums, i ****ing love film and have shot a ton of it, but it has its place, which is much more prominent in wakeboarding and snowboarding (and vert or any skateboarding in a controlled area). as for the idea of the vx1000 being "amateur", this is also a ridiculous thing to say. my friend who i mentioned before (who works only with 2 VX1000s) was flown to europe TWICE for ALL EXPENSES PAID trips just to film. if that's not professional, i don't know what is. i sort of see where you're coming from but i'm getting sort of tired of people saying "fisheye this and that" because they see learning skate filmers at the local spot with a fisheye plastered on.
i think the big disparity is that this is a VIDEOGRAPHY forum as opposed to a SKATE forum. no "pro filmer" like justyn is going to opt for the standard, although old technology. my advice would be this--post this on real skateboarding forum like skateperception and see what kind of laughs you get.

I was disagreeing that the vx1000 will always be industry standard...that view seems a little shortsighted to me.

and I was disagreeing with the statement that you couldnt get the shot skatetpcdotcom showed out of a HVX...because well, you can, with the right adaptor.

and what I really really want to know is what the hell is TRUE skateboard lifestyle...

I was a skateboarder for about 5 years...and besides from the awesome friends I made, I met a hell of a lot of people with elitest attitudes.

from what I can tell skateboarding is rolling on a plank with wheels, and good times with your mates...I dont see how people manage to take that and use it as a lever to aid them in climbing inside their own anus.

obviously the vx1000 wont ALWAYS be the standard, but you can bet it will be until the parts for them are completely discontinued and no one will fix them and not enough are left working.

i agree with you about the attitudes, i've met a lot of the same people, but i don't think thats specific to skateboarding, theres elitist a-holes in everything, no matter how down to earth or chill the activity is.

as for the fisheye, you can't achieve the same effect, not yet. there are entire websites dedicated to fisheye adaptation and modification with kids who have made a career out of modding lenses, and the hvx most definately does not have a fisheye that gives an angle of view close enough to that of the vx1000, and there's really no company that has fisheye glassing figured out like century, so its really the only option. another thing to consider is that while a normal century fisheye for the hvx is something between 700 and 800 dollars, the hd fisheye is somewhere in the 2500 range. including the p2s, thats like a 12,000 setup. why get an hd camera if u can only afford a fisheye that will downgrade resolution.

The dvx100 century ultrafish is wider than the vx1000? Right?

Are you sure century won't make a ultra fish for the hvx?

Since you are a professional skatevideographer anyways, sure you can afford a hvx+p2+the xtreme century fish?

yea, the fish for the dvx is wider, which is why, as skatepc mentioned, it has become part of the skate filming industry, mainly for the 24p, which like film is used sparingly in skate videos.

as for the ultra fish for the hvx, thats what i was talking about with the $700 and $2500 versions. "ultra" is just a word that century throws onto the beginning of the name of the product that i don't typically use.

as for affording that setup, i most certainly can't afford it. that was the point of me adding them up, to show how unbelievably high the price for it would be. most skate filmers that i know would buy a car with that money.

I think we will start to see HVX's being working the HD in long lens shots of large gaps, but the day i see someone filming a line carrying the HVX I'm going to cry. I image that large skate companies probably have a few, the ones that can actually afford to make full use of the HD capabilities.

VX1k and vx21's are going to be in the game for many years to come simply because of the Century death lens and size of the camera. HVX's are huge!
