Hvx200a

I just think that if your looking for the HVX to make a giant leap in the next generation, you are wishfully thinking. Look at the differences between the DVX through to the 100b. The differences are not groundbreaking. Panasonic will likely announce the 200a for spring, but its not going to match up against cameras higher in the chain like the 500. The question is, IS it worth putting off a purchase for. You make the call.

The HPX500 is another league, it can not be the successor of the 200 !!!!!!!

The Successor to the 200 is the 500. It is a sweet successor. Im not sure Panasonic is interested in stacking all the latest and greatest technology in the handicam form factor camera. The more cameras that are introduced above it, the less well it will stack up to them. Thats just the way it is. You can look for the evolution of the HVX to be a bridge from consumer cameras to Professional cameras. Just the first pro-sumer step. I know in my professional world the HVX is falling from grace quickly, with the introduction of the 500 and 2000, everyone wants to shoot with those, so Im going to be moving up very soon.

who is talking about "a giant leap", only you are !!!!!! I am talking about an update in the 1/3" class like for instance an improved LCD/VF, flip frame, improved noise reduction, some more frame rates etc. etc.

Good points from all.

My thinking is that eventually some of these high-end features will trickle down to the smaller cameras. After all, some of the best VariCam features were absorbed by the HVX200. That's like $60k down to $6k. So I think it's only a matter of time before history repeats itself, especially with Panasonic's track record.

Regardless, I'm looking forward to jumping on with some of the big brother cameras. Knowing the HVX200 & P2 workflow has become a creative impetus and money maker for me.

Just this week I worked a production for a major client using four HVX200 cameras. I was practically the only guy on the set that they relied on for technical advice relating to the camera because they just didn't know the finer details.

We had two offloading laptop stations for two units. The Mac was for the A-Unit and my personal PC was assigned to the B-Unit. About 2-3 cards in with the A-Unit, they realized all their footage was corrupt as it was offloaded into FCP. So, we made the quick decision to abandon it and move all offloading to my PC workstation. I got stuck with double-duty (can anyone say "bottleneck?") but we all got through it. In the end, I handed them flawless data over two hard drives (one mirrored for redundancy).

Anyway, the real point of the story is that I was able to make a crapload of money over two days by knowing the HVX/P2 system. And the demand just keeps growing. Expanding up the Panasonic camera line will only sweeten my deals.

I am still waiting on the hand held small form factor 3 ccd P2 cam.
Strip everything but 720p, a good lens and P2 card.
No tape deck, no 1080p, maybe even just one XLR input.
Cheap in price but best in quality.

I think you're going to be waiting a long time . . .

Consider how inexpensive the select features camera you have described above *might* be . . . then add the cost of a P2 card to it?

hey panasonic!! add a "record flipped" function so we can use the evf and flip out with a 35mm adapter and not have to flip in post. then upgrade the evf and flip out so we can actually reference focus without an external monitor. for me, these things alone would warrant a letter upgrade and i think you would sell a ton of them. maybe improve low light performance and reduce noise too... and while your at it, increase max frm rate to 120fps. that would be sick.

I second this even if they do not implement the 120 fps!!!!!!!

i think a good hvx200A upgrade would be to add dv50 recording to tape possibilities, improvement on the lcd screen and possibly focus assistance like the hpx has..

and maybe new line of colors like jazzy lemon yellow and maybe tropical mango purple, or high definition titanium silver .

lol j/k on the last comment of course haha

DV50 recording will not happen since it requires a very expensive tape drive acoording to Jan C.L. and I thought the HVX200 already has focus assist !!!!

Again improved LCD/VF, flip frame (HPX500 has it so it should be possible) improved audio circuits, some more framerate sby firmware update so we do not have to hack our HVX and improved noise reduction circuit would already be very nice for the HVX200A/210

I think these are the likely suspects and reasonable for sure. I dont think there will be much progress in the noise or light sensitivity unless the CCDs themselves are upgraded, and that is unlikely. They might be able to tweak a tiny bit out in the processing hopefully.

It has been like a month since this topic got updated...

The HVX200 was released in December 2005, are we approaching a new product cycle ? are there any News/Rumors on a new HVX200 ?

Only news we've received is that the HVX will remain unchanged throughout at least this year. It will not be updated until at least 2008, if then.

Well, five to 17 months. :) They certainly didn't say that it WOULD change in 2008, nor did they say that if it did change, at what point in 2008 such a change would come into play. So if it was December 2008, that puts any changes at 17 months away. Of course, it may not change in 2008 at all.

Aside from minor cosmetic issues, it doesn't sound like there's really any reason to bring out another camera. Sure, some things would be nice, but the thing is, who would sell their current HVX and drop a couple of grand on top to get a new model? I mean, every problem that I've come across is either already possible on the current model (like a "delete last take" function) or addressable w/ available tech (like a monitor in addition to the LCD screen or 35mm adapters) which most people who have the money have already invested in.

It seems to me that every potential problem with the camera is already addressable, and one that addresses the biggest issues is already available (HPX), which would make an upgrade purchase pointless for most people who've already invested in one. The only people it would really appeal to are the people sitting on the fence about buying one at all, and how many of them are out there that haven't already purchased an HVX?

Don't get me wrong, I think Panasonic has folks working on an upgrade right now, figuring out everything necessary to address these issues... the thing is whether or not it's worth releasing. I think they're probably sitting on it right now since there really isn't a *need* to fix many issues as most already have a real-world solution available now.
