hallelujah!!.... New P2 software from Panny for both PC and Mac!

OK, well, I'm trying to figure out if there's any way to use this as a substitute for P2 Genie on a powerbook. Is there any advantage to using the Panny software? I am totally lost with the menus, how do I tell it where to put the MXF files from the card on ingest? With P2 Genie, I have each card in its own directory. Any thoughts? Thanks folks.

The only thing I would like was for the P2CMS to be able to also "see" quicktime converted dvcpro HD MXF files... Why? So that We could export the quicktimes back to MXF, and put them in the P2 cards for playback on P2 decks or for sharing in other MXF applications, cross platform... You can obviously "print to video" from a timeline and record to the camera, but that's not fast or practical...

Raylight/Mac will have the capability to author P2 cards in the next major release. You export a HD quicktime from FCP into a special folder and after the export is done its automatically converted to a P2 folder with MXF files.

Excelent! This is great news! Will it split everything to the respective folders, like the P2 card structure? (Proxy, Video, Audio, etc?)

Yes, it works in a similar fashion to "P2 Maker" whcih we already have in Windows

Note, you now can import mxf files directly into FCP. However, the audio and video come in separately.

FCP will give you alert indicating the files are not optimized for FCP, but dismiss that, and connect the audio files with the video files and you do have that ability to work with MXF directly.

Quite cool

Hi David,

Have you experienced any problems with editing the mxf directly in fcp? I'm wondering if there's a downside to files "not optimized for FCP." Or is the downside simply the audio not being connected?

I'm surprised this is not bigger deal to folks. I guess most people have Raylight so this doesn't impact them so much.

*EDIT* I actually don't even get the prompt that says files arent optimized for FCP. You are importing directly from FCP off your P2 card contents (video) clips, correct? I mean, I guess it doesn't matter since it works for me. Not like I need an alert, but just thought I'd point it out. This is great! Thanks for bringing this up.

*update* this actually allowed me to access footage that the "Log & Transfer" method wouldn't. During a shoot, P2Genie apparently dumped only a part of a card's contents before getting an error, and FCP's Log & Transfer wouldnt recognize the partially dumped contents so I thought the footage was inaccessible. However, I just dropped the mxf files directly into FCP right now and it worked, so Im happy. Thanks again.

David,

Sorry, one more question. I don't have a problem importing the .mxf video files, but when i try to import the mxf audio files i get a "FILE ERROR: (x) files recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown."

I'm importing>files>mxf audio files. Is not what you are doing?

Before you get too far you might want to do an experiment. Look very closely (200-400% size) at frames from an MXF file in the sequence vs. frames from a quicktime created with Log and Transfer from the same MXF file. Do you see any difference or are they pixel-for-pixel identical?

This is exactly what I meant when asking if there was any downside to working with mxf files natively. I guess I'll have to test this out myself and see if there is any image degradation in the mxf.

Though, I still can't figure out how david got the audio mxf linked with the video through the import functions.

Thanks mvb, its nice to know I have a reliable solution in raylight if this doesn't work out for me.

I know how to identify the matching audio/video clips. What I mean is when I import the audio clip I get a "FILE ERROR: (x) files recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown." but I don't have this problem when importing the video mxf clip.

Any idea why I may be getting that?

I am having major issues... :(

I finally caught on to this release and installed on XP-32bit... I launched once and it didn't quite work,
some sort of problem creating a database...? Now it won't even start, it freezes on the logo... I went
to uninstall thinking I may have had to remove the old P2Viewer? Anyway.. I was shocked to see that
my Windows Uninstall/Install application wouldn't display a single program... ?!?!? scary...

so I am uninstalling P2CMS with the installer itself now...

any ideas as what to do? did I miss something that I should have read before?

EDIT UPDATE:
After un-installing the P2CMS with it's own installer I regained my Windows installer/uninstaller app...
I am looking for the manual to see if there are any specifics about installation...

I am un-installing P2Viewer now... but won't this create a conflict with Raylight/Vegas?

Most of the time the P2 driver for windows get corrupted which reasults in frozen computer. Just reinstall the P2 driver and if possible try to unistall the driver first then install the P2 Driver again and P2 viewer again this will fix the problem with P2CMS

I am sad to say it didn't work... I got the same error... do I have to do the regedit dance and delete files there?

I'm having trouble getting this P2 Contents Management Software to work. I've loaded source files from my harddrive. The source files are dvcpro hd 24 pn .mxf files created with the fs100 with firmware 4.0 that have been "organized". I believe the files structure is the same as if it comes off the card. The files show up, but there is a red "x" on every file and when I try to view them it says "It is not play back. It was not play back because there was incompleteness in the clip."

I can view these in final cut 5.1.4 even before created quicktime clips in the "Import Panasonic P2" window. What am I doing wrong here?

I completely gave up on this one... I figured it can't have anything worth the hassle... then again I never got it to work... :(
