Howdy,

I directed a short WWI film shot on the DVX (stock lens) in the 2005/2006 winter.

Currently, it's competing in an online film competition where popularity and viewers' rating has a factor in winning. Please check it out and help out a fellow DVXuser at...

http://exposure.cbc.ca/video/road-world

It's short, has action and explosions (all done in camera).

Thanks so much,

RK.

Good job, I really liked this. Now and then the color effect kind of came and went, was that on purpose? Or maybe just the web compression? Just curious. Also, what do you mean abou explosions done in camera? Just that they were actual effects and not VFX?

sjc

Looks like you added some sort of grading and color effect in after effects?

The only thing I disliked about it was that it seemed like the fight was taking place right next door to wear the house was. Didn' t really get the feeling that I was being transported to a different place.

But fantastic job overall!!!!!!!

The interior of the house has a lot of contemporary fixtures, door nobs and such, the exterior had aluminum siding. It looked like the characters were transported into the future. The war scene was awesome, very "Band of Brothers".

the explosions were special effects, rather than visual. we did them using air compressors and air cannons; that's what i meant be in camera. the air compressors/cannons were sick! and cheap!

the colour coming in and out would be a compression error. displayed on a television, projector or computer from either the dvd or a non-web compressed QT file... all is consistent.

budgy was about 3500, all my own. settings were factory, everything was done in post. but now i try to do as much as i can with the settings and little tweaking in post. all cc and grading was done in fcp, with a touch of gfilm filters that were tweaked from their presets.

in reality, the trench was shot on the same property as the house set. but it was the only place where we could do it. so we tried our best with set decking and framing.

and about the comptemporary objects in the house... i know i know, lol. it kills me everytime i see one!!!!

thanks so much for viewing.

That is the best thing I've seen off the DVX. Goes to show you don't need fancy 35mm adapters or filters.

How did you achieve the 2.35:1 aspect ratio?

i just used the 2.35:1 widescreen filter in the matte folider of fcp.

I liked the shots on war, but I would like to se more power in those explosiones, they were a little bit weak.

Wow that looked really good did you actually shoot in the dark or is that day for night post effect?

the night scene in the trenches was shot at night. when we got out there we couldnt see a thing. nothing could be done... we used our headlights as work light until or genny was up!

thanks. i storyboarded and choreographed that battle scene in my head many times before coming to the final. eventually, when we shot it, it was shot for shot from the storyboards!

yeah, i would have loved to have gotten more kick from the air cannons, esp that last one. but it's a combo of the right air compressor and appropriate type of soil/peat moss/vermiculite in the snoot to blast out.

I remember seeing this short quite a while ago. It really is impressive. I agree with a previous comment about the war scenes (day-time ones) taking place in too similar of an area as the lead's home. But, you've got to work with what you have, right? Either way, I thought this was a hell of a short film.

thanks for the kind words lawsuit. yeah it was posted a while (a while while while) ago, but the compression on the site that it was on at that time was garbage.

thanks.

Thanks for posting this -- it looks great! Congrats on the 1st place/people's choice win. Did you enjoy Europe?

Oh also, where were you able to get a hold of the World War I uniforms/props/guns? I've been searching for some myself, but have come up empty thus far lol. At any rate it's great to see so much superb work coming from our beloved camera.

yeah europe was amazing. seeing the sites like somme, vimy ridge, passchendaele, ypres and many more was unbelieveable, breathtaking and haunting.

i rendted everything from various places. most of the piece making up the costumes were from the CBC, one of canada's biggest tv networks. i rented from their studio here in the toronto. i filled in the rest by renting som egear that looked close to authetic from a army surplus place. for the most part, their costumes were very authentic an accurate. and i rented the funs from a local armaments company who outfts productions with weapons. the company did resident evil and other big films shot in toronto.
