Best Rugged Indoor/Outdoor Boom Mic

Hey man, the thing is that these are really basic basic questions that there is no way to get covered on this forum. we usually give informed advice about specific questions. We are not teaching Video Production 101, which I do in fact teach in my spare time. I WANT to help, I like to help, but I can't type a whole book for every person that wants to mount a rode video mic on their $3800 camera.

I am clocking out until you do some work on your own then.

What do you think this is here? Play time? I plan to order that book on audio recommended to me asap. Right now EVERY buck we got is going toward equipment for the movie. I read every night before bed. I am stacked with books on all subjects regarding making movies. I am a sponge for information. If you don't like me coming in here LEARNING because you happened to shell out 60 bucks on a book, then I don't know... I get this same thing from filmmakers who spent $30k on a college ed... they see me with an 8th grade ed making movies with known actors and they don't like it.

no. I could look but I'm tired now, so I'm just going to pretend you have a camera with xlr inputs that accepts mic/line levels like the dvx/hvx. ok so you have these switches that say mic and line. Setting them to mic will use the camera's internal preamps to record a line level signal. Setting them to line would bypass (there's a technical discrepancy here, but I'm going to skip over it, because it really wont matter in this case) the internal preamps and just record the line level signal you are feeding it. This line level would most likely come from a mixer (like the SD302). Reasons for having an external mixer include but are not limited to having cleaner (less noisy/less hiss) preamps. Lots of other reasons like better limiters and just better knobs are also great reasons. A cheap mic preamp will just give you a noisy line level signal - best to stick with the internals of a DVX and get a decent clean signal. Does that work?

I think mike's problem is you are asking questions like how to add on a mathemeticians forum. i should also point out that all of these questions have answers on this forum. We try to help but you keep asking the most primitive questions that are in sticky after sticky after sticky for the sheer reason to prevent 9 page threads on the best shotgun mic coming up every other week.

Fair enough, I was just feeling like you were asking questions, not liking the answers, ignoring the advice and refusing to spend some time and $$ to get the basic knowledge you need. If you plan to get more info on the side, that is good then.

There are many more things you need than a better preamp right now. If/when you have enough $$ for the rest of the kit, you can think about a mixer. The entry level mixer is the SD MixPre ($665) the one you want is the SD302 ($1300).

I asked about the best "Rugged" mic. There are no threads on that. Now Im asking about the Senn 404. There is no thread regarding the Senn 404 mic that I am considering buying. Oleg had one and I am picking his brain whether to buy it or not. He mentioned a few things I didn't understand, so I wanted to see what he meant. I'm not here to argue.

Oh, okay. So I could use the Senn 404 with the DVX's internal pre-amp. That's good to know. It's really tempting. I hear so many great things about Senn mics and Oleg seems to be the mac daddy of audio around here and he had one, so again, very tempting. Page 10! Celebrate.

Ok sorry if I've come off strong but watch the audio forums and see how many posts come through looking for an inexpensive shotgun for on camera use for someone's feature they are shooting which will be the best movie ever. Not saying your post was like that but anytime someone is looking for opinions on a cheap shotgun I think everyone gets a tad tense :) As for "rugged", take care of your mics.

yeah I think I'm ready for the weekend and have had my fuse shortened by some clients today. No 330 on a friday is not a good time to ask me to make 50 changes to a project that was finalized last week. Its all good though - the 404 is pretty looking. I'd get it but no need for a hyper right now. now if it was a 416 for $200... Everyone have a good weekend! :)

Okay will do. I may also grab the old Nagra mixer to double as a preamp. Can I make the 2 Channel DVX into 4 Channels with it? I can adjust the preamp of the high output of the Senn 404 like you said too, right? If the Nagra mixer interface will help the audio sound better from the Senn 404, I'll grab it.
