Best Rugged Indoor/Outdoor Boom Mic

Where is a good place to buy used audio? B and H charges $100 more online then they do over the phone for the AKG 300b and CK93. They quoted me $386.90 if I ordered it with a credit card and $486 if I use paypal. That doesn't even seem legal. The guy on the phone was an A$$ too. I hear a lot of good things about B and H, until now.

I saw that it say online to call for a lower price. sometimes retailers can't publish the price. That is a pretty good price for the mic.

I am not surprised with your experience talking to them though. They are not know for their customer service. I had an issue with them last year and I won't use them unless absolutely necessary.

Some recommend companies for audio here are:

Coffey Sound
Trew Audio

I am sure others can recommend some more.

Thanks. Trev has some nice stuff on there, a few Blue Lines, but no CK 93's. I guess ill call B and H, but it looks like a 2 week wait for the AKG.

ya, I don't know anywhere else that stocks that mic. Have you tried gotham, coffey and location sound? Good job getting that call in price!! I hate to buy from B and H, but if they are the only ones who have the darned thing...

I literally been searching for like a day for that mic online with no luck at a better price than B and H. Hopefully it won't take 2 weeks to come in. You can get it on ebay in Europe, but Im a little iffy on getting scammed across seas. I almost broke down and got the Oktava MK12, but then I was like "Nah!" I hear way too much good things about the CK93. I'm dieing to try it out! After the boompole and BBG and Shock Mount, its going to be about $700 just for interior audio, but a great investment. Im going to get the Audio Technica 4073 for outdoor.

The AKG Blue Line CK93 will take 3 weeks to come in and I can't wait that long.

Okay I just found a used Sennheiser MKH-404 which has Hypercardioid pattern. Is this a good interior shooting mic? Should I buy it!? I hear a lot of good stuff aobut Senn.

is it better than the Oktava? If so, I'll cancel my order and get the 404 and just by an adapter to power to T power.

I got:

At Sound-Room with the 5% discount I got:

- MK012A "Bello Nero" with Hypercardioid Capsule
- Rycote Baby Ball Gag Windshield (20mm)
- 15' XRL cable

I'm going to see if my shock mount fits the MK12, if not I'll get the K-tek shock mount and a carbon fiber boom pole..

goopd job you are going te be very happy with that mic. You will need the furry jammed if you use it outside.

you mean a shotgun for outside? I would concentrate on getting one complete package with a carbon fiber boom, good shockmount, furry jammer good xlrs (star quad) sony 7506 headphones and possibly a mixer. Either a mixpre or a 302 (it will give you low cut at 80hz which will make the oktava sound much better). Then worry about another mic, shockmount and wind protection. You can do some exteriors with a hyper, but if you do it a lot, you need both.

Remeber, mic it close 12"-18" away above and in front.

I don't need the furry jammer for inside though right? I got the XRL's available on sound-room. Hope those are okay for now. I guess I can't get wide shots with the octava if the boom has to be 18" above.

No Jammer is needed inside.

You can get pretty wide shots with the mic that close. Do some tests, since the mic is (above and) in front of the talent you get more than you think. How much headroom do you really need anyway? You can always boom it slightly higher for the master (for the guide track) and use the dialog from the singles where you will be able to boom it very close, then add reverb and room back in post. Remeber that there is no way to remover the "echo" in post on a shot the mic is too far away. What you do is put the mic all the way in the shot and raise it slowly until the DP tells you it is just barely out. Otherwise they will always tell you to keep the mic too far away.

Other options are planting mics on the set, wired lavs (running down the talet's pant leg) or, as a last resort, wireless.

You can get slightly farther away with a short shotgun (say another 12") but it probably isn't going to sound good in indoor situations and you need to spend A LOT ($1300) to get a good short gun. Long shotguns can get even farther away, but they are for outdoors and they are expensive and they require heavy duty boom poles a huge, expensive zepplins.
