XHA1 and Steadicam Merlin

I just replaced my Glidecam setup with a Merlin and all I can say is wow.

The attention to detail in everything from the packaging right down to the precision engineering of this device is inspiring. This is a company who cares about their customers and wants to enable them as best they can.

While I struggled to balance the Glidecam to the point where it was basically impractical for me to use it, the Merlin, once it's set up, is good to go everytime bar a few minor adjustments.

The design is beautiful. The DVD is packed with useful information and techniques. The carrying case is exquisite.

The fact that one of the main techniques is to control the Merlin with two hands (both taking some of the weight of the Merlin and camera) means less fatigue. The one-handed method (regarding absorbing weight) of the Glidecam made it very difficult to operate with pain in both my wrist and back.

The Merlin is much lighter than the Glidecam, making it more desireable to use more frequently. It folds down into a tiny size that is lighter and smaller than my monopod!

It took me about 15 minutes tops to balance the XHA1 perfectly. It's very important that you read the manual along with watching the video for a complete understanding. The user's cookbook settings on the Tiffen site were right on and made the whole thing very easy.

The only reason that I can see why anyone would have trouble balancing the XHA1 is that they don't completely understand the concept of balance with these kinds of stabilizing devices. All I can say is read and re-read the manual, watch the DVD a bunch of times and you will eventually get it. In particular, make sure you measure the arc size accurately. You can see by the diagram in the manual exactly where you should be measuring from and to.

I'm off on a camping trip with my wife for the weekend so I'll try to get some shots and post later.

All in all I am thrilled with my purchase. Again, I'm blown away with the quality and ease of use. I'd recommend this unit to anyone.

Careful with that tiny, little screw to keep the faceplate from moving. VERY easy to lose.

I also love the Merlin. Have fun.

Hey Steven, glad to hear you enjoy the purchase...I've just received the missing midweight from mine in the mail and I'll be setting mine up this weekend.

Quick question, did you use Noel's recipe? I believe it's the one that uses all six midweights.

6-ball bearing gimbal?

6-ball bearing gimbal?

Steven-- if you choose the Steadicam over the Glidecam considering you are a very meticulous videographer I take it as a high endorsement. All the things I've read I've thought for a while that the Steadicam is a good choice, but my only hesitation has been the weight. The xh a1 is 4.8lbs, right? and with battery and tape, I take it one would stay with the 950 battery and it wouldn't be possible to add a mic or even a Lanc could pull it out of balance--I just wouldn't want to max out the Steadicam making it an engineering challenge to keep it balanced as well as maxing out my arms. I see on the Tiffen site that they offer a gimbal that would take the weight limit up to 7.5lbs but they say it's available as a replacement for existing Merlins and is included if you buy the Arm and Vest. Does anyone know if you can purchase the Steadicam with the gimbal replacement without purchasing the Arm and Vest? I guess I could call Tiffen but I was just wondering if you Merlin users think the xh a1 weight with the current gimbal is not a problem? I'd love to have the arm and vest and maybe could go for it someday--just not now.

Thanks,
AF

Congratulations on the purchase Steven.

I agree with everything you have said - it really is an incredible piece of engineering.
Looking forward to seeing some footage.

Thanks :)

Merz, I'm not qualified to comment on your concerns of weight, etc. I would suggest you send an email to Tiffen.

I'll post some footage in a few weeks once I have something to put together.

If I got a Merlin, would I have to change the weights every time I changed to a different sized battery? I have the 950 and the 970.

Not sure what additional weight you would need to accomodate the larger battery but you would definitely have to rebalance the unit.

My advice would be to stick with the 950 batteries when using the Merlin, even if it means buying a couple more.

I just ordered my Merlin today for my A1 & HV20! I'm VERY excited! :)

I'll probably have to order another 950 battery, but I'm curious, how does the Merlin work w/ a shotgun mic mounted on top of it? To much weight?

One trick to working with 2 batteries is to simply add weight (gaffers tape and something like a few medium sizes washers, etc.. will go a long way) to the lighter battery to make both your batteries weigh the same.

Merlin doesn't care what you mount on it (camera, shotgun, light, chunk of lead, a small cat (the isn't moving)) as long as it's not too heavy.
A shotgun will certainly work with a HV-20, I not sure if it would go over with the A1, you'd have to test. If it is too heavy on the camera, then find a different place on the Merlin to mount it, maybe even on the front/underside of the lower spar facing forwards.

Shotgun generally runs fine on a Merlin.

Also generally speaking use your merlin with the 950. Get's a lot of hours use, way more than one could use the merlin for. Keep your 970 when you swap out to tripod etc.

Has anyone used the Merlin with an XH A1 and a Firestore FS-C Hard Drive? I have read some posts that say you can attach the FS-C to an accessory plate toward the bottom and with the FS-C, the XH A1, and an external shotgun mic it is not too bad in operation.

Has anyone had any experince with a setup like this?

Cheers!

Hi everyone,

How steep is the Merlin's learning curve, for someone who has never dealt with Steadicam before (me)?

I'm thinking of renting one out and try to use it with the A1 in a future project...

will the new merlin with the metal glimble support upto 7lbs now? I want to mount a light ontop of my camera.

I've heard these are great. I'd sure like to see a video of this in action. Do you have one yet?
