I love this camera (A1). Got it last week and have been playing around. PLayed some footage back on my 50' HD tv and it's absolutely stunning. I tried to re-enact that colour fringing people were complaining about and managed to get it, but I found that it usually only comes out when things are overexposed. shoot with the right shutter and exposure, it shouldn't be a problem and I'm not worried about it at all (the DVX had a similar problem with massive highlights but it didn't bother me). If people are noticing the colour fringing, then you're not telling the story well enough.
24f looks beautiful. Looks exactly the same as my ol' DVX in terms of motion, panning, etc. Native widescreen is a big jump up from the DVX100a, and I love that 2.35:1 matte! Unlike many others, I'm quite fond of that internal battery compartment (hopefully this doesn't bite me in the ass later when a battery gets stuck). But I shoot a lot with the camera wedged into my body and with the DVX, I always felt the battery sticking out and scared it might pop off. Also, focusing was surprisingly easy on the LCD using peaking and magn. Even without magnification, I could focus with relative ease. I put on my old Letus35 and shot some footage doing rack focuses, and I could definitely see the need for an external. But overall, focusing wasn't as much of a problem as I thought it would be.
My only qualm about the camera is that it's effin heavy. The front of the camera, like others have said, is noticeably heavier. I just can't imagine one handing it from the hand grip with a letus35FE attached to the front. Also, that pseudo matte box they give you is flimsy and cheap.
Audio wise, I can't comment on yet. but I've heard it was compressed audio whereas DVX wasn't?
Now I have to tackle editing. I uploaded some .m2t files on my sweet P4 1.7g 386RAM laptop using Vegas (that's right, it isn't even 512ram). Looks great, but my computer is about to leak its juices and die, so I'm about to upgrade to a MBP in a few days. But I was surprised my computer could even capture it.
I'm curious, FCP 5.1 has no problems with 24f HDV, right? Or does it have to be captured using AIC? I know AIC is way better for editing b/c it gets rid of the GOP system, but does it compare to Cineform? I saw some examples of the colour rendition on their website, and Cineform looks amazing.
Best purchase I've made recently, and really only see it as $1000 bump after selling my DVX. I can finally film my muppet opera epics.
