I shot over three hours of HV20 test footage in Tokyo, including Night stuff. And a couple of weekends back shot my sister's wedding in the English countryside near Ledbury and garned about two hours footage. All was shot at 24p, and with the Cinegamma mode. I wanted to view the footage as an extracted 24p, as opposed to direct off tape as "24p in the 60i" - but I do not have a MAC and Final Cut Pro (yet), and on my PC I have none of the NLEs or Cineform extraction methods.
To my rescue came free application http://strony.aster.pl/paviko/ HDV split, which let me get the footage off the camera and into my Sony VAIO PC with AMD Athlon 2800+ CPU.
Next I already had purchased http://www.tmpgenc.net/en/index.html TMPGEncoder 4.0 XPress, and it took the m2t file and recognised it as interlaced 29.97 fps. This program offers basic cut/trimming of footage - and so it is 'editing' by process of duplicating/re-inserting the clip(s) for each 'cut' should you choose to do so. I wanted to just put the raw footage onto DVD at this stage - but as 24p.
I then set the Filters: Deinterlace Mode: 24 fps (Special Animation) - which reduces the clip's framrate from 29.97 to 23.976 by using a method that prioritizes the removing of interlace stripes
and Filters: Deinterlace Method: Inverse Pulldown - which refers to the previous and following images and chooses the one without the interlace stripes.
On the Format (for Output encoding) I selected Windows Media Video 9, size 1440 x 1080, Aspect Ratio - Display 16:9, Framerate - 23.97 fps (Progressive), and a 1 pass CBR. I set the Bitrate at 15000 kb/s.
Encoding took about six hours for a 15 minute 30 second clip of size 1.65 GB. I then put this on disc via a Nero burn as a Data DVD. I popped this WMV9 Data DVD into my Xbox 360, and it plays out via my video projector. I am very happy.
