Backing up 16 GB card to DL DVD

I am wondering if there is a way to safely split the content on a 16GB card to back up 1/2 per DL DVD without the threat of losing footage . . . I don't have my 16 GB card yet even though I ordered it from B&H back in April otherwise I would just test for my self. But as there is much to consider in keeping digital media safe I thought I could get some knowledge before my card arrives.

Other than relying on a backup software that spans the entire contents of the card over 2 DL discs, I don't see. I believe the latest version of Toast (on the Mac) does that. Trying to split the P2 files in 2 seems dangerous to me.

Keep us posted. The simplicity of backing up the 8 GB cards over one DL is what's keeping me with those 8 GB babies.

Hope this helps

Are you on a PC or a Mac? On the PC side, Roxio's DVD Media Creator will burn data projects that span disks, and this should be easy since all files created by the camera are less or equal to 4GB.

I am on a macbook pro . . . What about the P2 software? Is it possible to use P2 Log to highlight the clips that you want to burn and drag them to the DVD until close to the 8.5 GB capacity and then repeat the process for the second 8GBs? I have had a couple of issues while doing some test footage that really brought home the importance of backing everything up ((((twice)))).

Toast will do it (6, 7 or 8). I'm not sure about relaibility issues with double layer discs, though I'm fairly certain single-layer has the edge; but certainly speed-wise spanning 4 Sl discs should be faster than 2 DL discs...

Has anyone done any backing up to DL using Toast? I am simply looking for a safe and reliable way to back up 16GB P2 cards . . . I have considered selling my 16 GB card when it arrives and getting 8GB cards (3 total) if I cannot find a safe and reliable field back up solution.

Any other discoveries from those of you who have already received your 16GB cards. Any reliable back up paths?

At dvinfo.net, someone backed up 50 GBs of p2 cards to a blu ray recordable.

Took forever, but that's 126 minutes of 720/24pn
