The shoot was stopped as the police stepped in and took our "toy" gun.... but heres what we managed to get before .... and we were given a written warning but not charged.. they told us "if it looks like a firearm, it is a firearm" It was a ****ing cap gun (with the orange tip on it) ! but whos going to argue with the police ? nieghbours called the police after seeing the shoot and filming had to be stopped.....

Only the upper class.... but nobody messes with them, especially not the police. Sorry, but **** like this gets my blood boiling. We have it tough enough as artists without being abused because of our own lack of legal knowledge. I'm gonna look this up, isn't it a constitutional right to carry arms? How the hell can they say a prop gun is a real gun? How many little kids have fake water guns that look real? Like I said, I'm gonna look it up and let you know, so next time a cop stops a shoot for something as stupid as that we have the law to fall back on and then any recourse they take afterwards becomes abuse.
I hope the mod that reads this understand im not trying to be political or whatever, but I think we should educate each other in these situations. If anyone knows the actual law on having a prop gun (a toy gun) at a shoot I would appreciate it, and I will look it up also for the benefit of this community and to educate ourselves for future confrontations.

thanks Glimmerghost it would be good to know was is and isnt allowed... so i t wont happen to others. what did you think of the movie though ? thats a draft, no colour correction or anything.. but thought i would put it out there.

some images of the gun used... well not really as it only apperas in a couple of seconds in the shoot that was stopped.

Sigh.. would have loved to finish off the shoot. ow well live and learn, at least we lived. - marty.

PS: still waiting on the feedback on the movie so please all let me know, Still a newbie so all comments welcome.

As an American Citizen, we are entitled to the right to own firearms. To carry and use them is a completely different story. The rule is, when shooting a scene with ANY firearm, real or not, inform the local law enforcement. They are not bright enough to solve crimes, and only capable of passing out tickets or hassle you. If they think you have a gun, they are likely to over-react, because the world is full of dumbasses that will carry a live and loaded firearm, and use it.

Well, I know a lot of people like to run around yelling f* the police, especially on anonymous message boards and stuff like that, but in this case dude, I'm going to have to side with the police with that one.

You really got to think about what the cop was seeing in that situation. And judging by your footage, he probably saw a man, hiding up behind some trees pointed at an open road. You arn't going to see an orange tip from that far away. And okay its a fake gun, but that gun was spotted by an officer. Just because he could say its okay to keep using, doesn't mean other people driving by won't think you are pointing a gun at them. And sure maybe not a real gun, but orange tipped guns can also shoot b-b's or paintballs.

And I'm not sure the whole "we're shooting a movie" thing didn't seem too believable, specially cause the HV20 is just a handycam. At the very least, it most definitely looked like you guys were doing jackass 'stunts' shooting something at cars driving by. But at the other end of that, who knows you could have been shooting another school-shooting press kit to send to NBC.

Dude just let the cops know what you are up to, it could really help avoid situations like this. And if you are in a small town, who knows, they might even know of a spot that's not so out in the open that could work better for your shooting.

But then there's the roundabout way for asking for permission, (if you don't trust the fuzz). Have two locations in mind (a fake one and a real one), and contact the police looking for permission to film. Tell them that you are filming with prop guns on the fake location. If they tell you its okay, then quickly tell them you had the wrong address and give them the real location. If they deny you, then shoot at the real location but watch your backs.

As per your footage does draft mean that you were planning to film in addition or just add color correction to this footage? I would maybe play around with different parts of the day to try and not get the blownout white sky.

And also maybe since he's pointing a gun, give the gun a bit more breathing room. The third still is a good example, but in the 2nd and 4th still he is in the center of your shot, feels like where the gun is aiming isn't too important.
