What ever happened to Serious Magic's DVCProHD Codec?

Now that Adobe owns Serious Magic, does anyone know what became of their DVCPro HD Codec? I thought before you had to purchase it separately? Or did it come with DVRack HD?

Barry, so if OnLocation is the old DV Rack, isn't this the program thats bundled with Premiere CS3 for PC? If so does this mean that CS3 is now compatible with the HVX albeit through its own converter? Is onlocation a recording program meaning that you can't copy the contents of a P2 card, but have to record HD over the firwire cable?

Thanks

Hi. This is my first post and I'm a bit desperate so please bear with me. I know the thread's about Serious Magic's HD DVC Pro Codec but can you tell me where to get HD DVC Pro Quicktime.mov Codec for windows. I tried Quicktime Pro 7 but all I got was Audio playback. I need to compress my movie into DVD for release by next week platform.

Your advise will be highly appreciated.

P.S I've been learning sooo much from this forum and I thank you all!

Thank you for responding. Let me clarify my prob . The post house rendered the final material in HD DVC Pro Quicktime.mov since their NLE's FCP. I downloaded a copy to my HDD. I have a windows laptop with a vegas system. I'm trying to convert the 45 minute file into AVI then compress to Mpeg2 then burn into DVD for release. I can't view the files from my HD even after I installed Quicktime Pro 7. All Igot was Audio? Where can i download HD DVC Pro.mov Codecs for windows? Any options?

I also have raylight installed in my laptop.I Learned it from your threads. That's how much i owe you guys. Anyway, I still can't read HD DVC Pro Quicktime.mov material. My feature's 45 mins long. i can view it on a macbook. The problem is, my macbook can convert it into an Avi file in 3 days and the mac books HD space is too small.

Raylight and Raylight Decoder are two separate products with their own
installations. Probably you have the former installed
and not the latter.

THANK YOU! I downloaded the Raylight decoder and it works. I was finally able to view my movie on windows except... it skips frames! Aaargh! I think my laptop's not fast enough (Sony Vaio FE77, 5400rpm, 120 gig HD, 1 gig ram). Should I proceed and compress the video into Mpeg2 format, for DVD burning, even if it skips on quicktime preview?

Again, I thank you! You have been a great help!

I had a long talk with a guy from Adobe who turned out to be a former Serious Magic employee (marketing possibly, but still quite knowledgable.

First off, yes, On Location will be part of CS3, they haven't yet decided if they will sell it separately. He said this newest release is mostly just adobe-izing the interface, and fixing bugs. It doesn't include any major new features. He did say that the NEXT release will be amazing, as they now have Adobe's support, and can really put some better time into developing the software.

The DVCProHD codec they developed is really just so they can store footage from the HVX, he said it's really not optimized for playback or editing. I asked if they had plans to rectify this, as it seems to me to be a MAJOR hole in Adobe's product- but he gave me the half-joking response "go talk to panasonic". He did say they are definitely working on it, but he couldn't say more.

I then asked what the workflow would be for HVX users, and he really didn't have an answer for me- the only way he said you could take the On-Location generated DVCProHD AVI files and edit them would be in a Matrox AXIO system, which supports DVCProHD natively in hardware. Of course, thats another $5-10K and won't run on a laptop.

Finally, I went over to Serious Magic and asked if they support that workflow- can you transcode a DVCProHD AVI to CineformHD intermediate codec- he said no, but they might work on it.

Pretty depressing for the DVRack Workflow.

One good note, Cineform told me they are about to drastically drop the upgrade price to Prospect HD, because they want to migrate the aspect users to prospect. The upside of this is that Prospect supports the AJA cards, so we could then have a true HDSDI output from the timeline. Of course, this means you still have to transcode all your footage to Cineform, which in my opinion is a pain.

Yes it will work correctly even if your computer cannot play it back real time.

Tom, are you referring to transcoding to CineForm on the fly or later in post, using Aspect HD or Prospect HD HDLink utility? David Newman expressed interest to develop the CineForm encode from DV Rack, if Serious Magic, at the time, would open the application to allow third party codecs be supported and selected. It sure would be a lot easier, though I wonder how much more computer performance would be required, in respect of CPU, drive and RAM.

What I want to know, does On Location finally abandon that somewhat frustrating SoftWrap licensing, now that it is bundled under CS3 product line? Thanks.

I meant transcoding to Cineform later in post using HDLink. Transcoding on the fly would be the best, although you are then stuck with files that require cineform to be read- kinda dangerous if you want to edit them say 10 years from now.

I believe On-Location takes a pretty hefty CPU, so I'd imagine converting to CF on the fly while capturing would be tough to pull off- of course, over time, with faster processors coming out all the time, it should be totally doable.

Don't know about the licensing, but would imagine that it would work like the rest of Adobe's licenseing, as they said they were 'adobeizing' the software for CS3.

I shoot HVX 1080pA24 to DV Rack, then convert to CineForm Prospect HD (PHD) 10bit and edit from there. Unless I misunderstand what you are saying, I do not see why you can not convert HVX sourced files, similarly, using HDLink for Aspect HD?

I doubt my core 2 duo 2.16MHz Laptop would handle the CF PHD transcode on the fly. Good point raised, regarding format source masters. Picking up a CS3 Production Premium bundle will be a nice way to get another DV Rack/On Location license, and hopefully steer away from SoftWrap. After that, I will try and move one of my older DV Rack HD installs to another laptop, need backup systems available. I hope SoftWrap make it easy for me.

Also, OnLocation is the only version for which Adobe has commited to Windows Vista support, there will be no patches for the existing Serious Magic product. And yes, SoftCrap is (deservedly) dead...

I've got to the point where I'm fed up of waiting. Being a PC user I've been holding out for CS3 to fix the editing and compatibility of P2. Having had my HVX since september and holding out I'm sadly dissapointed.

I mean if Edius can do it 9 months ago and do full on native support for P2 and now with version 4.5 which can export back to P2, why can't anyone else?

Also just what is the reason for a quicktime codec being developed for mac and not for PC? Is it something to do with technical difficulties on a PC? I chose my laptop a year ago and went for a dual Athlon spec compared to the macs that came out without the PCMIA slot for the P2 cards. I could have run with mac if it weren't for the slower hard drives [no raid options were available] and the smaller screen size. Admittedly with hindsight, I'd have opted for a Intel Duo core PC as I'm hearing it might be able to run a mac os. Nothing concrete unless you have links to articles.

With the PCMIA slot missing from the mac laptops, this leaves a PC to be the machine to take full advantage of the P2. So was this the reason why a Quicktime pro codec wasn't implemented for PC? To stop PCs having the advantage...

I am furious that Panasonic, Adobe and Apple have left PC users out in the cold. Panasonic should have had this developed for launch. PERIOD. Its there bloomin' camera system and codec. Adobe having shunned mac users and kept Premier as a PC only editing program [until now] should have developed the full P2 system and should be broadcasting about it. And Apple through wanting to gain domination over video editing systems should have developed the codec alongside Panasonic for PC.

Now if I've got any of this wrong I'd be happy to post an apology, provided you show me evidence of forward progression, but a 3 way blaming ring I just don't do. The buck stops somewhere.

On the other hand, after hearing great reviews and from HVXuser recommendations, I will be investing in Edius Broadcast version 4 this week with the FREE UPGRADE to 4.5 [Get that Adobe, free upgrades until the ful number version].

The fact it will be realtime editing with no messing around converting to intermediate codecs and wasting time, all of which are counter-productive to a camera system that is designed to be as simple as 'take the card out of the camera, copy to a laptop and start editing' means I'll be a happy bunny.

And if I need to work on an effects sequence I'll render out an uncompressed AVI to use in Aftereffects. That should be the slowest link in the chain. Nothing else.

Sorry for the rant, but I'm off to live my reality.

Thanks for your time.
