Envision & RebeccaD Present "Berlin"

What would make you think Steve's not onboard? I've got him listed on the front page of this thread as 'Key/Lead Gaffer', with Tung Bui onboard as Gaffer. I think they'll be a good team together, and seemed to work well together the one time they were on the same set, which was our first shooting night of SPARROW, about a year ago.

I'll PM you the script now, planning on trying to get it out to everyone by tonight, hopefully. Look forward to your thoughts on it!

The jury is still out to lunch on that one, though I'm leaning towards acting in it with Rebecca as well ... however, when you see the script, you'll see that her character is clearly the star/lead, more so than any other characters.

The decision I'm deliberating on is that shorts are the only thing I will allow myself to have such an active role in, both behind AND infront of the camera. I won't even consider it for a feature, at least not anytime soon. Since there aren't a lot of acting opportunities that I'm aware of in the area (because I'm not that well connected with other actual filmmakers in the Portland area), these are also my chances to improve another craft I enjoy improving on.

You are good at both, but you'd be so much better doing one or the other. After reading the script, that male role is going to be difficult, and regardless of who plays it, that actor will need a director helping them.

You're right. I think the film will do fine without a director. We all just work so well together, anyway. :) Seriously, I agree with you on ANYTHING being better when you can give it 100%, but I'd LIKE to believe I'm up to the challenge of still doing well at both if I put my mind to it, and saving the '100% focus on directing only' for the feature, where I'll especially need it even that much more.

All that said, there are 1 or 2 guys I'm looking at considering for that lead role, outside of myself.

Norm, I'm really sorry, but it's too far away. I know you have your mind set on me being one of the 2, but I just can't.... hope you understand... :cheesy:

Back to the drawing board ...

Updated the front page with Tim Oakley as Prop Master (previously worked with him on SPARROW, and a good friend of James Eubank - Set Designer/Art Director). Welcome aboard, Tim!

How's your working relationship with your DP? If you're both on the same page by going through a lot of preproduction (or not), then I'm sure you could play the role without having to worry about framing / lighting / etc.

Oh cool! James was telling me all about Tim at the wrap party, that will be cool to work with him.

Thanks, Ted. I'm KIND of hoping that since we've already snatched up that period, other folks will want to stay away from it so they don't look like they're copying, or specifically inspired by us, lol. That said, I'd certainly welcome more than one period piece out of 40, 60, or 80+ films.
Exactly!

I look forward to taking on a period piece one day. I do them in theatre all of the time but with film... wow, I wouldn't be able to get away with the things that I get away with when the audience is 20-30 feet away!

Tommy, its a good relationship. I've always got to have a DP I can simply trust, because even if I'm only behind the camera, I have a VERY difficult time paying attention to the picture if I'm also trying to pay attention to the talent's performance. For me, it's one or the other, which is the reason I can't direct & operate camera at the same time.

Shawn, Tim IS a really cool guy. You'll like him.

D and G, we hope to not disappoint with this one, realizing we're taking on a big endeavor & that the bar is already set high from the last fest as well as the new players that are entering this one ... should be a great fest with regards to the quality of films! Great idea on the wedding car service as well ... something to investigate.

Ted, you're absolutely right. On the other hand, you have to dress an entire stage, while with film you can simply dress for what's in frame & shoot/cheat some creative angles to still get what you want. Thankfully, our entire set will be dressed, so we'll be able to explore the space on this one.

Just so I can post before this thread hits the ten page maximum, I heard a rumour that "Berlin" was going to be a clever, better-than-the-original remake of Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS.

Any truth to that rumour, Norm?

LOL, I can't comment on that one Brian ... I'll let Rebecca handle the response. :)

James, no way! 300 was GREAT! Very cool to hear Tim was involved with that ... how come he doesn't get involved with more of the credit acknowledgements for films he's been involved with?

That poster is wicked cool and totally beautiful. If you can get Jeremy to make a 1440x900 wallpaper of it I will throw it on my background IMMEDIATELY.

Rock on, guys! Go team!

Thanks Kyle. I'll see if I can throw some wall papers together... even for you fancy pants widescreen folk.
:D

I think on budget films a lot of stuff gets sub-contracted out. In the case of Tim, Lucasfilm gave him designs and a million dollars for R & D and never told him what the project was for. That was almost two years ago. He only recently found out it was for 300. As a graphic designer, he also does a lot of title design for films that he doesn't get credit for. As for why he doesn't pursue credit acknowledgements, you'll have to ask him. Would you want to be associated with Howard the Duck?

Oh yeah, everything gets sub-contracted out. Think about it - you go to the best people that are in the industry without having to hire them and get a great result. I know a few graphic designers that do one sheets and larger prints for studios. And speaking of budgets, I've heard that 250k is about what a studio will pay for a poster design and then they could even scrap it. I don't think a million is really that much to spend on R&D for weapons, but what do I know? :)
