output to NTSC DVD and Web 720

Hey everyone,
Just wondering if any of you guys can give me a workflow suggestion for output to ntsc dvd and also to the web when shooting at 720/24pN. (I will be using variable frame rates)

I am thinking for the output to NTSC just lay it into a 24p timeline in FCP 2.1.2, export as quicktime movie, then bring it into compressor, and finally dvd studio pro? and for the web just use QT conversion with H.264?

Anyone with any insight please let me know what you think would be a good workflow.

Export QuickTime/current settings/audio and video/self contained/no recompression.

Drop it into Compressor with the setting consistent for m2v 16:9 in total minutes.

Elect Dolby2/ac3 audio, not aiff.

Export and then take m2v and ac3 files in DVD SP.

What have you tried?

For web, h.264 is great but for underpowered computers, it doesn't do quite as good a job.

havent tried anything yet, I am prepping for an upcoming shoot and want to be very well prepared. The guy editing this footage has not worked with HD before so I am trying to make his life easy by understanding the workflow myself and just explaining it to him.

Thanks for your feedback.

david-
is it better to export as a quicktime movie first and then put the quicktime movie through compressor than to just export straight to compressor? or is this due to the version of FCP cgravat is using? if it's not, i'd be interested in knowing the advantages or disadvantages to both methods.

thanks.

Is it better? I don't see that it matters for quality, but for workflow to me, it makes more sense.

I always do self contained.

then that file is there, and I can try some other options to encode if I want.

since i get better results making DVDs using mpeg-2 files than using quicktime movie files (or "FCP movie" files), i always assumed that exporting to a quicktime movie means youre losing a little quality...which is why i always assumed compressing mpeg-2 from a quicktime movie file would be an inferior option to compressing from the original sequence.

my guess is that i'm WAY off here and that compressing to mpeg-2 from a quicktime movie will give the exact same product as straight from FCP. however, if i'm right that a dvd made from an mpeg-2 will be higher quality than one made with a quicktime movie, then there must be some "upresing" (not sure if this is the right term) going on when running a quicktime movie through compressor to make an mpeg-2 file.

i very well may be illustrating a fundadamental failure to understand the basic concept of compression, but does any of this make sense? is that last assumption true?
