Canon XL H1

Does anyone know anything about this camera. I am a die hard Panasonic user but some people I am working with are interested in this camera. I just wanted to know some info so I can prove to them the HVX is the camera of choice.

Depending on their purposes, the XLH1 may be the camera of choice. If they need interchangeable lenses, or HD-SDI, or recording an hour to a tape, or a shoulder-mount form factor, then the XLH1 does those things and the Panasonic doesn't.

There are of course many things the Panasonic does that the Canon doesn't, and things that the HVX does better than the Canon too, including costing almost half as much. But the Canon has its own place in the market. So evaluate it based on what you guys need, not on which brand you like most. You can read more about the XLH1 on DVInfo.net, Chris Hurd has lots of articles about it.

That is a GREAT cam, if you are recording to an external device in HD. Once you run that beautiful image through HDV compression it defeats all the advantages. I have used them in studio situation into an HD switch. When you comare the images from external full HD to the same images layed to HDV tape it will make ou sick. HDV will soon b gone forever, so you may want to wait until they upgrade that cam to a decent professional format.

Geeez, sounds like hdv stood you up for the prom! :) hdv is a great codec. It offers great quality for the datarate. Just as mini dv provided great quality for the datarate. Here is a pretty simple way to know if hdv will be good enough for you. Was mini-dv good enough for you? Now if you owned a betacam or some SD cam that cost over $10,000 then maybe hdv isn't good enough for you. Even then the Canon XL H1 will probably fit the bill as it is a top shelf hdv cam. Now of course uncompressed out it will look somewhat better but most professionals won't be able to pick hdv out of a line up when shot next to a f900. The movie "The Signal" that was shot with a XL H1 was shot straight to hdv tape and the guy who bought the camera works with f900s everyday.

So if you need sweet slow mo or a small form factor go with the HVX. If you need sweet image quality, control, and respect from the pros get the XL H1. And if you just need something to capture some dang HD for some cheap, but steady clients get a Canon A1. Peace

And I would add...now you have a new and really cheap tool: the HV20.

Nik,

Your recent experience with the HDV is welcome! Thanks for your testimonial and congrats for your achievement.
