FS-100 Firmware Upgrade

If you just ordered it today, it will have version 3.0 on it.

I wouldn't count on that at all.
They said "all units manufactured after Februrary 1st" would have 3.0 loaded on it.
It you're buying one today - odds are it was not manufactured this morning.\

Especially if you're buying it from a distributor and not from Focus directly.

But you can still undercrank and overcrank just like a P2 but since the Firestore is taking out the redundant frames but needs a 60P stream coming out the firewire. So you set the HVX to 24P or 30P, set your VFR to whatever. Voila! The firestore takes out the redundant frames and makes it a 24 or 30 frame only file, in your choice of .mxf or quicktime files.
Be aware that the FS-100 3.0 will NOT do Variable Frame Rates in Native mode. You still need to do the non-native format for over/under cranking. BUT they are going to introduce that in the near future, from what I understand. This is only the first of many major FS-100 upgrades to come!

thanks! It's curious that HD content would be similar to SD content in terms of space... but I suppose that's only with DVCP 50....
It is also strange to me that more people don't seem to be using DVCP 50. I mean, I know the HD is the main draw for the HVX, but I am seeing tons of situations where I'll be able to use that format... Oh well.
Now That i'm way off topic, how bout them Bears? j/k

P.S. I still think the upgrade should be free for those of us (maybe I'm the only one) who bought it today...

Once you use the HD and if you do any over/undercranking, you will probably never go back, unless your mixing footage. I did that with some mini dv stuff and shot DVCPro 50 and it looked great, just not as great as the HD. BenB I clicked on the link in my email to get the upgrade, but it said something about shipping, can you not download it yet?

Was not aware of that. Well I'm sure Vegas can take out the redundant frames on 24P mode. Would've been cooler to have a native undercranked/overcranked file. All the more reason to wait for another update, yay i don't have to spend money just yet.

just got an email back from Focus... They said anyone who bought the FS-100 after the Jan 1 will get the update for free. Just send the tech dept a copy of the reciept, and they'll send out the disc!

Tha'ts great news - now what about those of us who jumped the gun and ordered it already. That's what I get for being excited.

How do you know this?

I reviewd the FS-100 for two magazines.
I'm shooting a large documentary with it.
I beta tested 3.0.
I am finishing up a comprehinsive video guide on the FS-100 that will cover all of it's menu functions, configuring it with the HVX, and on into FCP 5.1.2 importing, all based on the 3.0 version, which goes on sale Feb 5th.
I tend to be in touch with Focus on rare occation.

Aside from that, I haven't a clue. I just speculate. Or do I...?

I think you just speculate :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)..... just kidding, I asked before maybe you missed it but when you purchse the 3.0 upgrade, can you download it like the email says?

The 3.0 rev is pretty bug free. We beta testers were flogging it quite heavily and Focus engineers worked really hard on it. I do think it is safe to purchase and use. It is essential if you wish to more than double the recording time on the FS-100 with its pulldown removal of 24p footage.

We identified a few issues that primarily related to QuickTime pNative equivalent.

Even when they were identified to the company, Focus was on top of it before we sent the reports. I'll have a review of the FS-100 up early next week.

WELL!!!!!! It looks as though I finally got some of my questions answered about the Firestore 3.0! It also looks as though our previous thread on the 'Firestore 3.0' was completely eliminated!!! BUMMER!!! Although our posters got a bit SALTY with one another, the information that was deemed "Fact" by BenB, was the kind of information that I was looking for. Unfortunately, I didn't finish reading the article before it was zapped. As stated in my earlier post before it was removed, I hadn't even considered the FS-100 an option until today. David S., and BenB 's post in that thread had me rethinking everything where long form recording is concerned. Is there any way that I could get even a watered down version of those posts from that now eliminated thread????? All hostilities aside, the info was, from what I was able to read, good, good stuff. Thanks in advance......Cookester7.

It was actually a pretty funny post. I was having a horribly bad edting day, and with footage I'm just sick of looking at. Then someone emailed me to check it out. I laughed my butt off! Anyone wants the inside scoop on my assesment of what happened, PM me, I won't go public. But after that post, my day was a lot more fun! I'm still laughing over that guy!

Basically he "claims" to have bought one of the first FS-100s, claimed he had the very common problem of the front panel "peeling off", not falling off, but "peeling" off. And then ranted about how Focus "promised" him free upgrades for life, when in fact, Focus never made that claim at anytime, not anywhere. I think the Cineporter guys sent him over here to trash Focus. Or it sure seemed suspiciously like he was sent here by someone to do that. All his claims were way too outrageous, false, and petty. Or he's 12 years old and lieing about having been a DP for many, many years.

Cookester7, feel free to PM me any FS-100 questions you have.

The OP in that thread wasn't interested in contributing; something else was going on.

I couldn't determine if he was upset about paying an additional $39.00 or didn't like the FS-100. There were contradictions, and then it turned ugly.

In any case, I'll answer what I can. PM me is Ben doesn't cover it.

thanks a mill for the quick reply BenB.

So i am to assume there will be no problem shooting variable frame rates at 720pN or any other format. How about workflow, got Macbook Pro and FC 5.1.2, any problems there? And finally, whats the best way to be hooked up when shooting handheld? The under-camera holder seems a wee awkward..

stephen.

if not too off-topic, could you say what are the specs. on your MacBookPro
that's running FCP 5.1.2? I have a MacBookPro but heard that it's not
powerful enough for FCP 5.1.2

Thanks.

There was a MacBook, I don't think that configuration is sold anymore, I'm not sure. But there was one model that had a graphics card that Final Cut Studo 5.1 would not officially support. Don't remember the details off hand at the moment.
