Envision & RebeccaD Present "Where Silence Falls"

Ted, why is it I have no idea what you're talking about with the lines ... unless you're referring to the lines/curbes in the street ... how they narrow into the distance towards her? I just keep thinking I'm missing out on some filmmaker lingo I should be aware of, lol.
Sorry to be confusing! I am talking about the "vanishing points" in perspective drawings.
Example...

You got it right when you mentioned the "lines/curbs in the street!"

Just something that popped out when I saw the image for the first time. I liked it lot.

On a seperate note... I am glad that you got the iPod file to work. Geez... that is a HUGE file!

Norm, Dan and crew,

This is looking great. The BTS stuff is excellent. PM me - I should be able to help with some (free) spare parts for your "little modification problem".

Just spoke to Norm and it sounds like he is very close to having the locked edit done. He says it is coming along very nicely, but it took a long time to edit.

THANKS E! PM Sent.

Yeah, this weekend has been crazy. Without going into it too much, basically nearly a week was lost in time with this edit. When I showed up yesterday, once an edit was ready to view, it was apparent we needed someone who REALLY knew FCP and knew it well.

I contacted Forrest Burger, who's a DVXuser member that we came across via a Craigs List add, and it happened that he only lived a few miles down the road from Dan's office. I begged him yesterday to see if he could spare some time to bail us out today. He agreed, and ended up giving us over 10 hours of his time today as we cranked out the locked edit all in one shot.

It comes out at EXACTLY 6 minutes, with about 3 frames to spare. We have a couple of technical issues with it, in that the project (we found out after we were half way through) was started at a 29.97 time line, and the clips were somehow imported at 29.97 as well. A bit of an issue, since we need to submit a 24P project, and we shot it in 24P. Anyway, he'll contact a FCP genious/buddy he knows tomorrow to see what the fix is.

In the meantime, we left the office with the Mac rendering out the final (currently at 29.97) and we'll have to figure a way to get it to Justin (either uploading it to my server or his) tomorrow, while I'm across the country in Miami.

There is some SERIOUS color correction that will need to be done when I get back, as well as some marathon ADR sessions to replace a lot of the diaologue due to sound issues, but I can otherwise safely say that the locked edit is VERY solid, and the viewer will get done with this movie with a WOW effect ... and that's just watching the film as is.

Once Justin's score is in place, and we further trick out the film ... well, I can just safely say it's the best film I've been a part of yet ... no thanks to me, but to the team I was able to work with on this.

Oh, one last thing ... I had Forrest watch the VERY last take (the martini shot) that we did of the film. It was a take of Rebecca delivering a very emotional moment of the film, and she had been kind of holding back before it. Just before this take, I asked her to just let it all out as we had talked about ... that this was it. Well she sat there & let it brew in her for a bit, and as we were about to call action I could already see a tear drop down her cheek ... I knew this one was going to be good.

So after the editor watched this raw take today, he was speachless ... said he got chills (as I did again watching it), and could nearly tear up (as I did again watching it). My only regret is that we couldn't just stay on her the ENTIRE take, because my character has some lines so we had to do some cut aways ... it's still an amazing scene, I believe, but she really owns it.

K, good night all, as I pack like a mad-man to leave for the airport a 6AM, and spend the entire day traveling to Miami for the week for work.

Oh, and I'll update the Special Thanks section with this soon, but in the meantime THANK YOU FORREST BURGER FOR SAVING US!!! You are amazing & a great guy to have to sit in a room with for 10+ hours.

Sounds good Norm! You should have documented that fiasco and submitted as a dramafest flick! :) Have a safe and good flight man!

Umm...what happened Norm? A "lot" of the dialogue? What scenes and for what reasons? I still have all the sound files so I would like to hear what you are talking about.

I haven't heard the audio so I can't say anything for sure, but it will be my guess that all the stuff shot at "Bill's" house will have to be ADR'd. The room wasn't nearly dead enough. I'm also guessing that all the stuff shot in the kitchen will have to be done, as footsteps were rather loud. I could be wrong, though...

yeah, blankets are good. I found a craigslist post where someone was selling furny pads for 5 bucks apiece, bought a ton of them. Now they have a bunch of fake blood on them from the last thing I shot :-/

Sitting at Portland's International Airport with some time to kill ... gotta love PDX's free Wi-Fi ... no wonder it's voted #1 Airport in the U.S.

Yeah, I'd like to get a good set of those furniture pads as well ... Jerry had a bunch of them for our ADR session, and looks like they can come in super handy. Ryan also uses them to cover carpets in homes he's shooting in, etc. Good stuff.

Shawn/Jerry, there were some POSSIBLE ADR issues from the footsteps, but those aren't really the issue at all. There were a few level concerns initially (dialogue in one take/angle hotter than the next), but both those & the footsteps are EASILY taken care of with some quick & simple cross fades of the audio, adjusting levels, etc. Since the dialogue can be heard well above any of the SFX, those aren't the concern.

The concern lies in just some of the recorded audio itself, namely either some weird interference (when Eric comes up from behind Amy to give her a hug at the fridge in the CU shot - this was not in every take, but unfortunately was there in the BEST take for focus/performance, etc.), and several distortion/audio spike sections.

With regards to the interference, I'm HOPING that it's just from the RF transmitting to the camera ... in other words, if I can find the right take in the compact flash (the audio recorded directly to the Mirantz (sp?), then that may be a simple fix. However, even for that scene Eric's voice is nearly lost as he's going up the stairs, as the boom mic wasn't able to follow in that wide shot. Even though his voice is natural to be going into the distance, it's too much & may be very difficult to hear, especially after score, if any, is added in that section.

The distortion/audio spikes are throughout, surprisingly. Even in a couple of spots where voices were only raised, not yelling, there was some distortion. I was hoping (as we had discussed) that the audio that recorded into channel one (via the RF) would solve the problem as we had the gain/levels down on that one vs. two (which was recording hotter), but unfortunately all we got was the same exact distortion, but at lower levels ... if that make sense. So it was the exact equal to simply turning down the volume on a stereo ... doesn't give a different recording ... just turned down what's already there. So I'm 99% positive that it was recording exactly what the mic was sending it, meaning it'll sound exactly the same (though possibly softer or louder) as what's recorded on the compact flash. I hope I'm wrong, but we already heard audio clipping from the blown levels on Rebecca's last take (the best one when she really let it all out) on the compact flash (when we checked it that night after we wrapped), and while there's no 'clipping' in channel one/two from the HVX, it's distorted throughout.

So, all this long winded stuff to simply say that we've got ADR to do. Perhaps there are some that are so extremely proficient that they can replace dialogue in the middle of a scene & no one would be the wiser ... unfortunately, that's not me. I'm pretty darn good at matching the words up with the mouth, and getting inflection, etc. ... but once I replace dialogue anywhere, I've got to pretty much rebuild the scene from scratch for audio, replacing ALL the dialogue, sound FX, ambient room tone, etc. so that it can all blend & match accordingly.

If someone else living near the Portland/Vancouver area knows 100% that they can replace just parts & match/blend it perfectly with the rest of the scene ... AND wants to lend a hand, please let me know! :)

Anyway, Shawn, not a huge deal ... I've overcome worse audio issues before, and in fact did a TON of audio replacement for SPARROW, completely rebuilding several entire scenes from scratch due to the rain towers, etc. I'm still very glad to have had you on set, as you provided a wireless solution for us to be able to get dialogue/audio to the camera, while mounted on the Steadicam, vs. just using the onboard camera mics.

On a different note: Well this was cool ... as I'm sitting here typing, my particular gate is facing where the military air reserve base takes off from ... I just watched four F15 fighter jets take off right in front of me .... not more than 100 years on the other side of the glass! Never have gotten to see them take off from such close distance before.

I love fighter jets. That was about the best part of being in the Marine Corps for me... watching all of the planes.

Speaking of the F-15... while we were in Thermal, CA shooting our pilot at an air show, an F-15 did a really nice 10 minute routine. Man, it was such a rush as he flew by breaking the sound barrier.

And the best part was when his routine finished up, a P-51 (prop plane) joined the F-15. The 2 planes flew "hand and hand" for about 5 minutes. It was so incredible!

Have a safe flight! I'll talk to you when you get to my time zone!

PS - I hope you got some nice quality time with your family.

-Ted

Thanks Ted ... quality time won't be until I get back later Friday night, and then the next several days will be a delicate balance between trying to spend time with them, and SLAMMING everything else I can into getting this short completed by the 31st for submission.

Yeah, the P51 Mustang was a great plane ... I used to be SO into planes/jets, knowing just about everything about all of them when I was a kid. They should have a hand-in-hand flight with one of the first WWI biplanes and the new F22 Raptor.

HAHAHA!!! I don't think that the F22 can fly that slow!!! It was amazing to the the F-15 struggling to fly so slow with that P51.

And yes... I have always loved planes. I actually joined the service to be a RADIO/TELEVISION BROADCASTER (LOL) or a Flight Navigator. Instead, I was trained on how to shoot down airplanes. I was very sad. Luckily, I never had to shoot down anything but a drone!

Okay, JUST landed in Miami a bit ago ... my morning started at the PDX airport at 7am this morning, and finally wrapped up with landing in the Miami one after 11pm EST. It's been a pretty blah day with regards to all that time spent, but I DID get to sit next to a guy (on the last leg from my re-routed flight from Dallas to Miami) a guy who's one of the sound engineers for big concerts/productions, etc. His actual title is "Play Back", basically filling in instruments during the performance that can't be performed live like they are in studio. He's also a composer/artist himself, and was excited to hear about DVXuser, as he'd love to be able to score for films, etc.

Anyway, he was on his way to Uraguay to do a show with SEAL, who he's been working with for over a year, and in fact when we got off the plane he had to catch up with SEAL who was right in front of us. Pretty cool guy (Mark Summerlyn, if I remember correctly - have his card in my bag), and someone I'll definitely keep in touch with. Who knows ... maybe I'll look back in a year or two & be GRATEFUL that my flights got all screwed up so that we could cross paths.

Justin, I'll give you a call now, as it shouldn't be too late, but I gave your cell phone to Dan Ayers, who said he got our locked edit online somewhere for you. I've got to call him as well to get the address.

Ted/Larry R, I got your PM's, but will respond later. Right now I'm heading out of the hotel in search for food (likely will have to be a burger/fries at a bar, as it's 12:15am here), which will be my first actual meal of the day!
