HVX200 directly to laptop?

is it possible to record variable frame rates this way???

No. Variable framerates are only available in 720pN (native) mode and that mode is not compatable with the NTSC signal output of the firewire port :(

hey John, I haven't tested it but I think DV-Rack has a way to record time lapse in which you tell it how many frames per second to record. hence doing variable rate. I'll have to re-examin this. I should be getting my bracket this week, so I'll be doing tests and I'll report back.

That would be interesting if DV Rack could be used to undercrank and overcrank but I can not quite fathom how that would work. It seems like it would have to process twice for each capture. Set the camera's framerate at 24p and set DV Rack to capture timelapse at 60fps?

I would think that Serious Magic (Adobe now) would have been pushing that as a big selling feature if it could somehow work.

Let us know what you find siniarch. Good luck :)

thanks John! 720pn PAL yes??? im in Pal land.

As far as I know, the native film mode is not available as a streaming output on PAL cameras either but I am not positive about this.

Dreamerinsf,
So here are some shots of my bracket. I still need to get a noga arm and put some plastic slides inside for a smooth fit, but it is all working great. My only limitations comes from DV Rack and the slight delay, but since most of my filming will be Film Style with Follow Focus (w/ marks) I think the delay will not be an issue. As you can see I've also implemented a space for an external Hard Drive. This way you can just swap drives pretty easily and its a very cheap storage expansion option.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks

Siniarch, your setup looks great. I've been thinking of doing the same thing. How big is the screen on your tablet?

I like it. I esp like the thing to hold the external HDD. But what provision do you have for venting and cooling that HDD? Does it get hot?

Also, how heavy is all of that, if you were to say, put that thing ona spider-brace?

Has anyone tried the *Free* application VirtualDV to capture?

It comes with the Apple FireWire Software Developer's Kit. The same one that has DVHSCap and VirtualDVHS which many use to capture HDV. With it you can cpture (NTSC or PAL) DV25, DVCPro25, DVCPro50, DVC ProHD 1080i (60 or 50) and DVC ProHD 720P60.

So you could (in theory) firewire to your computer and hit "Capture" and grab the footage to a hard drive. All with hardware you already have.

If it also "captures" all of the framerate flags then Variable framerates will be available in post just as if you'd captured from a VariCam tape. Also you could spit them out to a deck if needed.

Some one give it a try. I may soon, I'll just have to link up with my friend who has a HVX200.

Hey Guys,
Sorry I haven't replied. Its weird. I'm subscribed to this thread, but I did not get any email when you guys replied. I only got an email today when "pboltar" replied. Weird.

I missed your message. Wonderful! setup.
I would like to know the cost to make this happen.
Awesome!
Thank you. I went to a shop to get the aluminum piece made. Its pretty much all welded or bend, so its pretty solid. But for custom work, things get very expensive quickly. I believe I paid around $550 for this piece. But if anyone has a Toshiba Protege M400 series Tablet PC, I'd sell it for $350.
I got rid of my laptop and no longer need the bracket.

There actually is enough air space between the HDD and the Laptop. Its not completely sealed. And no, the HDD did not get Hot when I was using it.
As for putting it on a Spider Brace, that is out of the question. it is too heavy for that. It would work better either on a steady arm, or a tripod.
