5.1.2 vs. Lacie Big Disk

here's my current workflow... popping the p2 into a (PC) IBM laptop, copying it across to a lacie, then plugging the lacie into my macbook...copying the files to the internal drive and trying to import from there.

but it doesnt seem to be working, ive heard other people having problems with the lacie and 5.1.2? is anyone using this workflow?

I have two Lacie Firewire drives, neither has ever given me trouble. I doubt there's a Lacie specific problem.

What exactly is not working? If you could be specific about your problem, we could be more specific about a solution.

There is a bug in OS X on all Macs and the MXF data format. Doesn't show up on all machines, but when it does, it's irritating.

How is your LaCie drive formatted?

I would honestly use MacDrive on the PC so that you could format your drive Apple HFS+.

Otherwise, you would need to format the drive FAT32 if you wish the Mac to write to the drive.

But, as Ben said, we need a specific "doesn't work."

Sorry guys...I guess I was being so rash because I'm just frustrated with the whole issue. I'll be more specific:

I record to P2 pull it out of the camera and plug it into my PC laptop (my macbook doesn't have a PC/P2 card slot) then offload to a default format (i.e straight out of the box) LacieBigDisk USB (i'm assuming that the Lacie isn't fat32 because my macbook wont let me write to it?)

then I plug the Lacie into my Macbook Pro, drag both contents and lastclip.txt onto my internal HD (only for for test purposes, I intend on getting a G-sata if I can make this work) then try and import them using 5.1.2

the clips show up, and can be previewed but when I click to import i get the spinning rainbow thing for a long time, eventually the clip shows up in the batch list with a little red (!) next to it.

the only other test ive done is leaving the P2 in the camera....and pulling the clip directly across using Firewire. (same method; to internal drive and then import window in FCP)

That worked fine....

I've checked all the permissions and anything that comes off the disk is set to read only, but even after I've changed it to "read & write" it still wont work.

Thank you both so much for your time.

Yes, each contents folder and lastclip.txt gets its own folder, its the only physical way you can not overwrite or muddle the stuff together.

I keep each P2 offload as its own separate entity.

"I would honestly use MacDrive on the PC so that you could format your drive Apple HFS+."

I have to totally agree on this...

oh sweet lordie.
that worked.
I formatted the lacie drive to Apple HFS+

shot some footage to P2, put the P2 into my IBM laptop, copied the files straight across to a new folder on the lacie...then I just plugged it into my macbook (which I dropped today, how awesome do i feel) and imported straight across. to the macbook internal drive.

now all I need is to BUY macdrive and a G-sata for the final edit.

thanks guys!

p.s does anyone elses lacie make a noise like two very small beaver race cars when you start it up? are my disks about to fail :(

(beaver race cars dont exist its just the best way I could describe the noise...although being from the UK i've never really heard a beaver...make of this what you will.)

Adam:

hate to say it, but I'm not a big fan of Lacie drives. I don't believe there is a fan in there, and I don't think the company uses the best drive mechanism, ie Hitachi.

I would strongly consider granitedigital.com drives or weibetech.com other the g-tech

Based on my history with LaCie, I wouldn't put anything on there that I wasn't willing to lose...okay, I know you're backing up religiously so that shouldn't be a problem, right? :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

damnit!

this is a money issue, not a lazyness issue...the only large external drive I have is a lacie...which is now formatted to mac. I could take along my desktop :o but thats PC and wouldnt read it....If i could afford a new external drive I could copy from P2 (PC-Macdrive) to the lacie and then get someone to import via FCP to my external drive from the lacie whilst I carry on working.

argh.

Editors are power users for hard drives. If you ask around editing forums you are going to find that Lacie drives are pretty much hated. In particular, using drives without fans is especially risky.

I've always said that LaCie drives are for people who enjoy paying middle-man markups, national advertising and packaging costs. Not to mention inferior drive mechanisms.

Buy a bare drive from zipzoomfly.com newegg.com or at Fry's frequent loss-leader sales (if you have a Fry's in your area... otherwise inCOMPetentUSA often has similar promotions). Buy a high quality case from a vendor like wiebetech.com macsales.com or several others. Assemble the drive (wiebetech even gives you the screwdriver), plug into your Mac or PC and format.

I am also much more partial to SATA over Firewire. I just put together a 750 gb Seagate ($329 on sale at Fry's) in a wiebetech box (with USB, FW and SATA) and matched it with a 2-port Express34 SATA card for my MacBook Pro. On a desktop machine, I could use it USB, FW or plugged into a spare SATA port on an SATA board with external ports. Much greater throughput than Firewire.

Of course, all we have to do is solve the Apple/FCP/P2 issues.

I dont have a Frys in my area.....the closest one is thousands of miles I imagine. But I catch your drift and I don't enjoy paying Middle man markups...I'll take a look at buying myself good Box and building a drive (it didnt really cross my mind you could get enclosures with FW or even SATA)....my problem is being in middle England, I have no idea where the hell Im gonna pick up a 2-port express34 SATA card.

I'm hoping I have solved my FCP problems for now....although I'm going to run a couple more tests just to make sure.

We are all still waiting for an PCMCIA to Express 34 memory reader or perhaps a PCMCIA to USB reader for the MacBook Pro.

Adam... I would imagine that dealers like Wiebetech will ship to UK. Exchange rate is actually favorable for you now, but of course you face customs, duties and VAT.
