What's the life-span of a P2 memory card?

Even Spec-comm said that them developing something as simple as a "p2 extension cord" (something that you plug into the p2 slot that has a cable that can run to a p2 slot that would be isolated from the camera. The point being to be able to hot swap without having to touch the camera) would have to sell for 1k for it to be worth it for them to make.

you have to realize, a company like Spec-Comm is trying to make a profit off of what they design, understandable, but I'm saying, if someone could 'crack' the SD upgrade, they're not trying to make a profit, just to save some bucks... and we all could benefit from it too... any of the other hardware inside can be left alone...

... I don't think it's necessary to 'crack' the RAID controller ... just if there's any limit to the size of flash the device can handle, and I would bet Panasonic made provisions for upgrade, within the firmware already, or that it could be made by a software geek... but I'd also bet that this Spec-Comm company doesn't want to give out too much info about all this, to eliminate competition.

after all, I'm not talking about actually making a 'clone' P2 card, just modify what's already inside... and flash memory isn't really all that complicated... :)

With the FS-100 about to provided the equivalent of pNative recording, why is everyone waiting on the Cineporter?
You're not serious, right? CinePorter has so many benefits that it's still very compelling. Not to rag on the FS-100, but there's so much...

First of all, multiple hard drives which can be configured in a RAID or as sequential, for up to 320GB of storage. As RAID1 you could have onboard data duplication for ultimate reliability.

Second, the ability to play your clips back by thumbnail, not through some vague text menu.

Third, the ability to connect via the secure P2 connection rather than the much-more-likely-to-become-disconnected firewire port.

Fourth, the fact that it uses the on-camera batteries rather than its own proprietary battery.

Fifth, the fact that it's been designed with an internal battery that will actually take over and cover the time between battery swaps, so even if the battery dies in the middle of a shoot you can keep shooting.

Sixth, the fact that it has onboard FW800 and USB ports, and will actually do offloads by itself to client USB drives(!)

Seventh, the fact that it lets you view your footage during playback in high-def instead of standard-def only (not the FS's fault, an HVX design limitation, but still the CinePorter gets around it).

I'm sure there are many other reasons (that I can't think of right offhand) but those are just a few that leapt to mind, as to why many of us prefer the design of the CP over the FS.

(of course, the FS's main advantage is that it exists, it's shipping now, and it's battle-tested and works; CP must now prove itself in all those categories).

Actually, though, there is one big potential bonus for the FS over the CP, and that's for Mac users who want to go direct-to-edit. Until FCP allows native MXF editing, the FS's V3.0 ability to record directly to QT MOV may actually trump the CP's other advantages for some users.

You're certainly welcome to try it. I don't think most of us are willing to take the risk, but we'd be grateful to anyone who wants to try.

However, Spec-Comm has said that they looked into it and determined it wasn't possible.

maybe 'cause they're speaking about 'not profit feasible for them to go through all that trouble',
and/or they're trying to actually make a P2 clone.

but, then again, maybe they're right ... :Drogar-Dum(DBG): ... I'd still like to see those pictures of the insides,
Ahhhh ... to the search engine here... unless you have the links off hand :)

I guess I am serious Barry at least as far as pNative support.

Cineporter has an impressive feature list, but what you have described is what is promised, not what is shipping.

That's a big difference.

What you state as "facts" is essentially prerelease marketing, and until the product is shipping, and these "facts" actually are both implemented and work, I am serious.

I'm not putting the company down, but the fact remains that with the v.3.0 update to FS-100 expected shortly 24pNative essentially is only available on the FS-100.

Regards

Well, yes, I put that in there -- one is shipping, one isn't. But you asked why someone would be waiting, and I think those are all very good reasons why someone would wait.

FS+V3 does not a CinePorter make. Anymore than an XHA1+FS becomes an HVX. Totally different products and different designs and different capabilities.

The FS + version 3 of the software will finally be what the FS should have been on day one. But it still doesn't do nearly as much as the CP promises to do. And that's why people are still waiting, anxiously, and anticipating.

I just hope it delivers what it says it will, reliably. Heck, I hope both products do that.

And, FS version 3 isn't out either.

The reason I am asking is because we are considering either a FS-100, a p2 Store, or a Cineporter.

I'm trying to avoid anything firewire related in downloading or acquiring footage. I don't like blown buses or ports.

If the Cineporter were the size of iPod, I'm in. :-)

I tried, but can't find the internal pix's of the P2, thread

I tried, but can't find the internal pix's of the P2, thread

I did several searches with several parameters but came up with no thread showing internal photos of the P2 card, but did come up with an interesting thread regarding interfacing of it ... in the thread called ...

Attention modders: mod this. (Cheap P2 anyone?)

it mentions how the P2 has a standard PCMCIA 32bit interface, and shows an interface for using either the P2 (i think), or another Flash Memory card, but I don't know much about what was being discussed, cause I don't know much about the P2 card, and didn't read the entire thread.

If anyone can find the thread with the internal photos of the P2 card, please post it in this thread.

I did post pictures of the insides a while back, but I can't find them either. If i get a chance I'll take some more.

Whoot ! ... you just got me as a future customer ... :dankk2: !
Please make them close-up, High Resoultion if possible :)

I couldn't find the thread either , but found one about SanDisk's new VERY fast Flash chips

in the thread ... titled CF cards @ 40MB/s

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?p=620493#post620493

I didn't know they could transfer that fast.

Sandisk announces "world's fastest" compact flash cards

OH... while I have your attention ... can you tell me if the P2 cards use Wear Leveling, to stop writing to the same parts of the same flash area, if you don't use the full card capacity with each usage?

SnapShot, I can tell you that everything about the P2 card is proprietary and confidential. I can also tell you that it's a "computer" with an "operating system" so there's no reason why it can't do Wear Leveling.

does this mean no pictures of the insides?:(

SD cards have wear leveling, so??????
what's the problem? can't I ask a question? I wanted to be sure,... you'd be surprised how many expensive electronics may leave out the most simple things.

Here are the pictures I posted last time.

interesting ... basically simple ... MPU and/or controller chip & Firmware Flash on one side,
with Voltage regulators and some transistors, ...
... and the 4 SD cards on the other.

any possibility you can get a bit closer to this one ... :) .... by the large chip area?
or does that 'proprietary and confidential' thing get in the way? ...
of course, I'm not asking you to post the firmware source code,
... but I'd understand if you can't mention these chip #'s .
