Importing HDV Footage into a DVCPRO HD Project

So I'm cutting something together that was shot in 720p24 on the HVX200. Now they want to add a few shots that they shot in HDV (on the sony fx-1, 29.97 i assume because i think thats all that camera shoots in). Is there a way to do this? I know that HDV is compressed more than DVCPRO HD but it was shot by someone else and thats the camera they use. Any ideas on how this can be accomplished?
Thanks

I think your best bet would be to use compressor to convert the clips to 720p/24p. Compressor does a really good job of deinterlacing, without too much of a perceptible resolution loss. you can then import the new clips into your timeline.

I created a custom preset in Compressor to transcode between footage with a Z1U and the HVX200.

Deinterlaced down to 24P using the frames option

The camera is also capable of shooting in regular DV as well.
In HDV mode it shoots 1080i. 59.94
I would try and find someone that has an AJA Kona card in a mac and use that to capture the footage into FCP using the DVCPRO HD 720/24p codec.

Have you seen MPEG Streamclip? www.squared5.com
We have used it to convert M2V files from a Firestore (shot from an FX1) to both HDV and DVCPRO HD so we could edit in FCP.

I have a similar situation but reversed. We have been shooting on FX1's for a new project since March and just bought HVX's. So we will be shooting with the HVX's for another 3 months then finish editing. So I am guessing 75% of the footage will be HDV and the rest DVCPRO HD. Allot of the HDV footage is already captured.

So should I convert the HDV footage to DVCPRO HD or the other way around... Not sure how long it would take to convert all of that HDV footage.

Final delivery is SD DVD for now and HD DVD or Blu-Ray in the future.

However, to do this you have to aggressively address the deinterlacing issue.

Not every way of doing it produces good deinterlaced DVCProHD footage if that is your goal

make it a 720 60p timeline, and drop the interlace footage in. the NLE should down convert the 1080i into 720P, and the 24p 720 fottage will be 2:3 pulldown. it should work seemlessly. its like mixing DVX24p footage with, 60i footage. the timeline just has to be 60i. or in this case 60P.

what are you editing on?

I'm using a G5 with Final Cut. I just got the crossgrade so I am at 5.1 and need to update to 5.1.2 still. I will have to try out your suggestion when I get back to my office tomorrow night.

It can be accomplished seemlessly in Edius Broadcast . . .

Until you add too many filters or layers of video, then all bets are off. Edius's specs only hold up to single layers of video. I even got this info from teh Eidus Broadcast Product Manager in an interview I did with him.

The question was about FCP, not Edius, anyway.

Hey thanks for your snappy response to my post of a week ago, Ben.

In re-reading the title of the thread, and the text of the original posters question, I don't see any reference to Final Cut . . . but hey, maybe that's me, sometimes I post to a thread without reading it and make an a** of myself. I'm certain this is something that would never happen to you.

So thanks for the update on Edius (which, of course, is not what the question was about).

Peace.
